Primary Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Manager to oversee the development and execution of acquisition models for our corporate development team.
The Acquisitions Modeling team at American Water is a dedicated financial advisory team responsible for preparation of detailed financial models and due diligence efforts in evaluating the largest and most complex investment opportunities (M&A) to advance American Water's inorganic growth objectives.
As a key team member supporting American Water's regulated water and wastewater acquisition growth the Sr Manager will:
Be a catalyst for achieving internal consensus on key business decisions,
Effectively create and present analyses to executive management to guide strategic decision making,
Manage a team of financial analysts working on detailed financial models for standard and moderately complex opportunities.
Key Accountabilities
Responsibilities could include, but are not limited to:
Preparing and owning complex financial evaluations of new acquisition and investment opportunities
Performing detailed financial analysis such as scenario and sensitivity analysis, customer rate impacts, debt defeasance costs, tax calculations, and other related analysis as applicable
Ensuring alignment of acquisitions with internal investment guidelines and highlighting financial deal risk factors
Creating and presenting reports in support of analysis to credibly deliver results of findings to state and executive leadership
Developing and maintaining strong relationships with state business partners
Collaborating cross-functionally with various levels of management to develop and document modeling assumptions in a timely manner
Working in a dynamic team under minimal supervision; independently handle presentations and work efforts with senior or executive management
Directing, managing, evaluating, and holding a team of analysts accountable to achieve short-and-long-term goals
Managing junior staff members to aid in their development by evaluating quality of work, financial analysis, and presentations while assisting them in identifying and highlighting key insights in the analyses
Driving 'best practices' and 'continuous improvement mindset' by assessing and measuring the on-going effectiveness and efficiency of Acquisitions team systems and tools
Supporting budgeting and regulatory filings related to acquisitions
Special projects and ad hoc analysis as required
Knowledge/Skills
MS Excel - advanced / expert level • Ability to analyze detail, see larger picture, and guide strategy
Ability to effectively communicate complex financial analysis to non-finance and Executive Level audiences
Ability to identify the need for and drive the development of new financial analysis, models, improvements, and efficiencies
Possess leadership skills yet are a collaborative team player
Ability to quickly adapt to professional collaborative environments, manage priorities, handle ambiguity, take initiative, problem solve, and achieve results
Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

Microsoft Office Suite programs (MS Word, PowerPoint)
Detailed and demonstrated knowledge of:
Financial modeling using various valuation methodologies
Economic principles relating to utility ratemaking, preferred
US GAAP accounting principles, municipal accounting is a plus
Methodologies and practices of data collection and research
Experience/Education
Undergraduate degree required in Finance, Accounting or related field, or equivalent experience.
MBA, CFA, CPA or other equivalent advanced degree or certifications preferred
Minimum of ten years' experience, including financial analysis skills from investment banking, corporate development, valuation advisory, management consulting experience or similar experience.
Knowledge of regulated utilities is highly preferred.
Interest in municipal capital markets and/or public-private partnerships (including joint governmental and private sector ownership) is desired.
