Location: EAST LANSING, Michigan
The Vegetable and Floriculture Pathology program in the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences at Michigan State University is seeking a highly motivated individual to work as a member of the pathology research program.
Job Duties
Assist in overseeing and coordinating research, laboratory and/or field operations in order to meet research goals. Perform experimental tests, assays, and records and analyze results in order to provide conclusive data for research projects. Consult with research supervisor in order to assist in planning and designing experiments. Perform field work in order to run experiments. Oversee compliance to laboratory safety regulations and procedures. Review the work of research technicians and student employees. Oversee laboratory/field needs and order materials, supplies, and equipment. Operate, calibrate and maintain laboratory/field instruments and equipment in order to ensure proper functioning, accuracy, and compliance with written specifications. Research literature in order to maintain a current knowledge of laboratory research methods and terminology.
Support research and extension efforts in understanding pathogen and disease management issues in Michigan vegetable and floriculture productions systems working as a member of a team including professors, research assistants, graduate students, and undergraduate students. Work is conducted in the office, laboratory, research fields, and within greenhouses. Field and greenhouse activities include designing, coordinating, maintaining and applying pesticide treatments; evaluation of the data collected; and setting up field trails, maintaining field plots, and collecting samples during growing season. Office activities include data analysis, technical report writing, creation of presentations, and effective communication with extension educators and collaborators within and outside of the state. Laboratory activities will involve microscopy, pathogen, isolation, inoculation, and molecular testing.
Minimum RequirementsKnowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through completion of one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master's in Plant Pathology; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research methodologies, writing reports, supervision, software, data interpretation and handling in area related to research being performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; Michigan Commercial Applicator license & Driver's license
Desired Qualifications
Two years of experience to include: conducting research trials on host plant resistance; sampling, spore trapping, isolation, and identification of fungal and oomycete pathogens; use of molecular techniques, including DNA extraction, PCR, and sequencing"
