GENERAL PURPOSE:


Perform a variety of general and finish carpentry work duties including assembly and repair of temporary and permanent structures, buildings, additions and fixtures in accordance with established standards and instruction to meet the requirements and needs of the institution in support of the University's mission. This position is considered essential and is required to provide services in emergencies as determined by University Administration.





SUPERVISION RECEIVED:


Works under the direct supervision of the Associate VP for Facilities and Engineering or his designee which may include a senior Carpenter or other employee in a higher classification.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED:


The Carpenter will be responsible for planning and coordinating daily work assignments and will work collaboratively with other maintenance and facilities staff, and may exert occasional supervision over student workers as needed for successful outcomes.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


*Performs general and finish carpentry work and repairs in all campus owned buildings and facilities; uses equipment, tools, and supplies as generally accepted in the discipline and as instructed and with personal and workplace safety a foundational work principle.


*Maintains tools, equipment, maintenance vehicle, and assigned shop area in proper condition.


*Operates a wide variety of equipment, which may include the following: trucks, fork lifts, lift platforms, ladders, front loaders, tractors, air compressors, levels, miter boxes, squares, chisels, planes, saws, drills, sanders, other pneumatic and electric tools, etc.


*Performs miscellaneous duties: operates two-way radio/cell phone; organizes and maintains work vehicle(s), shop(s), and storage facilities; fuels and cleans trucks and cleans tools; etc.


*Observes, corrects and/or reports as appropriate, safety conditions encountered in the course of performing work duties including but not limited to emergency lighting and egress issues, smoke, heat, and CO detection equipment deficiencies, hazards (electrical, mechanical, or tripping), faulty or unsafe equipment and tools, and general employee and client safety conditions, etc.


*May perform work in other building trades groups as assigned and time or conditions demand including basic electrical and plumbing maintenance repairs.


*Builds, installs, and repairs structural woodwork, flooring, ceilings and cabinetry; operates, maintains, and calibrates hand and power tools; read and comprehend plans and blueprints; recognizes and selects appropriate lumber types and grades; makes rough sketches; estimates cost, time and materials for projects; performs heavy physical labor; follows and gives oral and written instructions; maintains cooperative working relationships; demonstrates sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population.


*Installs and repairs locks and door hardware and cuts keys; installs, repairs and maintains gutters and downspouts, siding, brick & block, concrete, and drywall; uses glues, paints, and stains; installs glass in windows, doors and partitions; replaces damaged ceiling and floor tile and other damaged equipment; performs journeyman level carpentry in the construction, repair and renovation of floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, ceilings, windows and screens.


*Maintains, repairs, and performs preventative maintenance for a wide range of functional equipment and systems so as to insure their proper and safe operation.


*Responds to routine and emergency calls for repairs and service.


*Installs new and used equipment, orders replacement parts, and performs PM tasks.


*Researches and purchases materials, supplies, and equipment parts.


*Possesses working knowledge sufficient to read blueprints, instructions and diagrams, layout drawings, and engineering specifications related to system or equipment installation, repair, and modification.


*Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

DESIRED ATTRIBUTES AND QUALIFICATIONS:


Education and Professional Experience:


A.High School diploma or equivalent; and,


B.Journeyman Carpenter's License, certification or equivalent documented training; and,


C.Valid US Driver's License; and,


D.One (1) to two (2) years successful full-time experience in carpentry and minimum competency in two (2) other maintenance fields.





Preferred Education and Experience:


A.Two years of full time experience in general trades and maintenance work;


B.Experience in multi-facility environments;


C.OSHA 10-hr Certification;


D.OSHA 30-hr Certification.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Knowledge of operation and use of various carpentry and maintenance equipment, building materials and supplies, hand and power tools.





PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use arms, hands and fingers to operate and manipulate equipment and tools. The employee is frequently required to be mobile, communicate, and hear. The employee may occasionally be subject to a variety of outdoor environmental conditions including heat, cold, and precipitation. The employee must be able to walk, stoop, climb, push, pull, bend, and perform duties in awkward positions while handling equipment and/or materials.


The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to sixty-five (65) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Mental demands include varied degrees of occasional stress while performing job duties.


WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works varied environmental conditions and locations including extreme temperatures and/or weather conditions. Exposure to dangerous machinery, fumes and contact with insulation, dust particles and asbestos, and danger of electrical shock may occur. The noise level in the work environment will range from moderately quiet to frequently loud.


SELECTION GUIDELINES: The Carpenter will be selected after a formal application procedure, education and experience rating, oral interview, and reference check. Job related tests may be required. All offers of employment are contingent upon a satisfactory criminal background screen, motor vehicle record search, drug and alcohol screen, physical and/or psychological examination at the University's discretion.
