Position Description
Northern Improvement is seeking a motivated individual with a strong work ethic and a positive, problem-solving attitude to help lead a successful asphalt paving crew. The Asphalt Paving Foreman will supervise all asphalt paving operations and is responsible for directing day-to-day crew activities, co-developing, monitoring, and executing work plans and schedules with the General Superintendent and other members of the operations and management team. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to, municipal operations of asphalt paving, patching, milling, and repair work.
Duties and responsibilities
Supervise and manage asphalt paving crew performing asphalt paving, patching, milling, and repair of streets, highways, airports, and parking lots
Read and implement plans and specifications
Work professionally with the owner’s representatives to the standard of Northern Improvement’s expectations
Direct a crew consisting of equipment operators, truck drivers, and laborers on work procedures and techniques
Provide positive support and encouragement to crew to keep crew members motivated
Timely completion and submittal of timecards, invoices, and work orders
Receive and prioritize daily work assignments and make crew work assignments
Effectively communicates the plan with the crew
Communicates daily plans as well as any disruptions with the superintendent, trucking coordinator, and the asphalt plant
Monitor asphalt quantities used and calculate cutoff amounts needed for job completion as well as materials needed to complete the job
Work closely with the superintendent to ensure efficiency
Informs the General Superintendent of performance or operational problems at work sites
Ensures safe work procedures and safe work practices are followed at work sites
Prepares and or assists with preparations of accident and injury reports
Assist the General Superintendent in hiring field crew (i.e. truck drivers, operators, laborers)
Safely operate all equipment used in asphalt paving proficiently and be able to teach others how to run new equipment
Capable of learning to utilize new methods and equipment
All other duties as assigned, delegated, or necessary for operations
Position Requirements
Qualifications
Minimum 5-8 years of asphalt experience, prior supervisory experience required, or combination of both
Must possess a valid Driver’s License
Ability to pass a pre-employment urine drug test and comply with drug and alcohol policies during employment
Working conditions
Outdoor environment subject to changing conditions and temperatures
Occasional exposures to fumes, dust, odors, heights, and loud noises
Travel required
May be required to work 60+ hours, 6 days a week
Physical requirements
Verbal, auditory, and written capabilities to effectively communicate in an articulate manner
Clarity of vision at varying distances to perform various work assignments
Standing, walking or sitting for extended periods of time
Ability to work long hours and nights
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized tools and equipment
Reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally
Occasional bending, kneeling, or crouching
Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling object(s) weighing up to 50 pounds
