Job Description:

The Covey Lab at Skidmore College is looking for Program Manager who is passionate about environmental science, land management, supporting undergraduate research scholars, and facilitating core aspects of The Soil Inventory Project's mission to build an accessible national-scale soil carbon inventory to support managers and markets. The Covey Lab is home to The Soil Inventory Project (TSIP), a national non-profit conducting soil sampling in agricultural systems throughout the country. The Program Manager serves as a point of contact for partnering farm managers and landowners and is responsible for overseeing the success of TSIP's projects from initial enrollment through data analysis. These duties will include communicating with producer partners, overseeing student research teams in the field, advising students during independent studies, and ensuring successful operations of TSIP's soil sampling program.


Education: 
  • Bachelor's degree in Soil Science, Environmental Science, Geology, or related field
  • Master's degree preferred


Experience: 
  • experience in soil science or environmental research
  • Experience working in an academic or research setting


Technical Skills: 
  • Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) 
  • Strong technical writing ability
  • Familiarity with soil testing equipment and procedures
  • Computer literacy (MS Office suite, database management)


Management Skills: 
  • Project management and coordination of research activities
  • Team leadership and student supervision


Communication Skills: 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Ability to interact professionally with students, faculty, and external partners
  • Experience in building and maintaining professional relationships in academic and research contexts


Organizational Skills: 
  • Strong attention to detail in sample management and data recording
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize effectively in a research environment


Additional Requirements: 
  • Familiarity with academic research processes 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Physical ability to conduct fieldwork and handle soil samples



Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience with soil carbon analysis and climate change research
  • Familiarity with Skidmore College's academic programs and research initiatives
  • Experience in mentoring undergraduate research assistants
  • Grant writing and budget management experience
