Description: Job Summary

As the D^3 Funding Opportunities Manager, you will be instrumental in securing funding opportunities from federal agencies, foundations, and corporate entities. Operating within the shared services model in the Labs Unit of D^3, you will collaborate closely with Labs Directors and internal teams to manage pre-award support in the form of researching and identifying opportunities, grant writing proposal development and progress report narratives. This role demands a strategic mindset, exceptional written communication skills especially for grant writing, willingness to learn about lab research areas, and a deep understanding of grant development across various sectors.

Position Description

Grant Proposal Development:
  • Collaborate with Labs Directors, faculty Principal Investigators (PIs), and researchers to conceptualize, develop, and write grant proposals.
  • Support the proposal development process, including narrative drafting, budget preparation, and compilation of supporting documents, with a keen awareness of developments in AI and policy implications
Grant Management Process and Compliance:
  • Works in close partnership with the PI and coordinates with HBS DRFD/IQSS/ Harvard OSP to ensure that:
    • relevant parties have required information in a timely manner.
    • PIs stay on track to meet University and HBS deadlines and requests for information. there is close coordination among all parties on grants related activities such as budget development and proposal submission, developing and monitoring project budgets, tracking of expenditures, and preparing accurate financial reports.
  • Supports the PI in building a compliance culture and ensuring compliance with University grants terms and policies.
Relationship Building and Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Play a supporting role in the discussions between HU offices and federal agencies, foundations and corporate partners.
  • Through Harvard's institutional representatives, cultivate and maintain relationships with federal agencies, foundations, corporate partners, and industry stakeholders to enhance grant opportunities and collaborations.
  • Represent D^3 at internal Harvard Business School and Harvard University meetings.
Grant Identification and Opportunity Assessment:
  • As the program matures, additional time will be spent researching and identifying funding opportunities from federal agencies, foundations, and corporations, with a focus on grants relevant to the topics of interest at the Institute.
  • Evaluate grant opportunities for alignment with D^3's research and goals, considering the changing digital landscape and policy dynamics.
This role is responsible for other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., business, economics, communications) required
  • 5 years of proven experience in grant development, pre-award and post-award processes, and proposal writing required.


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong understanding of the evolving digital landscape, technology trends, and policy shifts impacting grant funding and project implementation.
  • Foundational understanding of generative AI and traditional AI, with the ability to comprehend and communicate AI concepts effectively in grant proposals and project discussions.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to navigate complex grant requirements and foster collaborations across diverse stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of grant compliance regulations, budgeting principles, and financial reporting practices, including experience with grant management software and tools.


Additional Information

This position is approved for a 2-year term (with possibility of renewal/extension) which begins on the person's first day of employment.

This is a hybrid position which we consider to be a combination of remote and onsite work at our Boston, MA based campus. HBS expects all staff to be onsite a minimum of 3 days per week and departments provide onsite coverage Monday - Friday. Specific hours and days onsite will be determined by business needs and are subject to change with appropriate advanced notice.

This is a 40 hours/week, overtime-eligible position.
