Overview
OUTPATIENT SPECIMEN COLLECTION AND PROCESSING
Collects specimens from outpatients using approved specimen collection methods. This includes following the policies and procedures as found in the Phlebotomy Procedure Manual on the MCN Policy site.
Assists coworkers as needed.
Greets patients and interacts in a professional, courteous manner.
Correctly identifies patients using two patient identifiers.
Performs venipuncture using approved procedures on adult and pediatric patients.
Labels tubes with patient present.
Ensures timely transportation to lab of all collected specimens.
CLERICAL AND CUSTOMER SERVICE FUNCTIONS
Answers multi-line telephone, aids with clarifying orders, notifying clinics and providers of specimen problems. etc.
Communicates clearly and accurately with staff and patients
Does whatever is reasonably necessary to meet the needs of the customers.
Interacts with all other professional staff in a courteous and helpful manner.
Demonstrates high level customer service to both internal and external customers by timely responsiveness to customer needs, including acting at all times to ensure client satisfaction through positive interaction, excellent telephone and face to face communication skills, timely handling of specimens and paperwork, and thorough problem-solving.
ORDER ENTRY AND LABEL GENERATION FUNCTIONS
Supports the phlebotomy team by providing the appropriate paper work and labels needed to complete specimen collection.
Verifies orders using Epic, or places orders using Epic Beaker application.
Orders labels using OE or LIS
Applies collection information and closes patient charts
Credits and results orders as indicated
Correctly executes downtime procedure for equipment and Epic failure.
TEACHING AND TRAINING
Trains student interns, new phlebotomy employees and other hospital employees in all aspects of phlebotomy.
Laboratory Testing
Performs Coagulation testing at the CHH Laboratory with accuracy, speed, and efficiency under the guidance of the MLT.
OTHER DUTIES
Assist with inpatient draws as trained and requested.
Keep work area clean, organized, and free of expired supplies.
Stock carts and draw booths. Moves inventory and supplies as needed from stock room to phlebotomy area and actively participates in Kanban inventory control.
Follows timekeeping procedures.
Prioritize work according to established procedures.
Checks bathrooms for urine specimens.
Transport specimens to laboratory via pneumatic tube or XT Online transportation system.
Follows all current research protocols and coordinates transport as indicated.
Attend and participate in section meetings as required.
Completes required CE and compliance requirements (2 hours per year).
Follow department and hospital safety procedures.
Carry out job responsibilities in an ethical, effective, and professional manner.
Report potential compliance problems using the reporting processes as outlined in the Code of Conduct.
Model ethical and appropriate behavior, professional standards, compliance, and personal integrity.
Participate in training programs.
Understand and comply with the Code of Conduct, OHSU and departmental policies and procedures, applicable rules, regulations, etc.
Perform other duties as assigned by Manager, Supervisor, or Lead Worker.
Follows all procedures and policies set forth in the CHH2 Laboratory and Phlebotomy Procedure Manuals on MCN.
Responsibilities
High school diploma or equivalent and completion of phlebotomy training program, including significant time spent in a clinical rotation or 3 months of recent (within the past 12 months) phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory.
OR One year of college level psychology, communications, or science course work plus one year of dedicated phlebotomy experience/training in a clinical laboratory
Strong customer service skills.
Ability to interact with a variety of clients including doctors, nurses, laboratory staff and patients, and maintain a customer service focus at all times.
Ability to initiate procedures and policies to improve work flow and work accuracy in Phlebotomy.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Skills in dealing with high volume fast paced environment, with sometimes difficult public contact.
Ability to work independently within established guidelines, to communicate and work effectively within a group.
Certification as ASCP (PBT), NHA (CPT), AMT (RPT) or equivalent required, or must be completed in the first year of employment.
Compliance with Code of Conduct, Respect in the workplace and Applicable policies, procedures and agreements related to position, department or OHSU as a whole

Qualifications
Phlebotomy skills and knowledge
Experience with a Laboratory Information System and Hospital Information System.
