About the Opportunity
This is an open position at FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., and is in the Legal group. The position reports to the Associate General Counsel. There will be travel associated with this position as the attorney will be expected to (i) participate in PJM stakeholder meetings and processes, (ii) attend meetings, hearings, and conferences in Washington, D.C., and other venues, and (iii) support business clients at FirstEnergy's headquarters in Akron, Ohio, as well as other facilities in the FirstEnergy footprint as the need arises.
The junior to mid-level federal regulatory attorney will work on issues related to FirstEnergy's legal obligations for wholesale customers, and also on issues related to FirstEnergy's participation as a Transmission Owner in the PJM Interconnection, LLC Regional Transmission Organization. As many of these issues will be regulated and adjudicated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), experience with administrative agency practice and procedure is a plus. In addition, this position will support state regulatory attorneys on combined federal-state matters.
The attorney will support FirstEnergy's transmission investment business plan, and monitor/participate in PJM stakeholder processes.
The position will work as part of a team on complex regulatory litigation, and will supervise outside counsel and consultants. Over time, the attorney may take on other assignments in the federal regulatory or company legal department space, as needs arise
Summary of Responsibilities:
Handle legal matters in the areas of federal public utility regulatory law, with special emphasis on legal obligations to serve wholesale customers, and PJM transmission matters.
Work collaboratively with internal and external counsel, consultants, and internal business clients and staff on project assignments.
Draft and review agreements, regulatory filings, and other legal documents in addition to other corporate communications and documents.
Advise internal business clients and other FirstEnergy counsel on matters within the attorney's responsibility.
Provide valuable strategic and business advice.
Qualifications:
J.D. from an accredited university required. Member in good standing of at least one state bar required.
Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in a litigation practice at a regional or national law firm or national industry association.
Demonstrated excellent legal research and writing skills.
Demonstrated strategic legal thinking, and problem-solving skills with the ability to provide legal advice taking into account business context and factors.
Solid communication and interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with internal business clients, outside counsel, and external stakeholders
Strong work ethic and demonstrated ability to understand new areas.
