Chief Objective of Position:

Reporting to the Director for Center for Honor Enrichment and Community Standards (CHECS), the Assistant Director for CHECS (conduct officer) assumes a leadership role in developing and maintaining the university's community standards, articulating the Honor ethos that permeates the campus, and providing educational opportunities for students. Specifically, this administrator adjudicates allegations violations for the University's Honor Code (including academic integrity incidents) and the Student Code of Conduct. The Assistant Director is responsible for advising the Student Honor Council, facilitating training to prepare students to serve in panels, and assisting members in planning and executing educational opportunities for students. The Assistant Director contributes to the philosophical and practical vision to meet the departmental and University goals from the University's Strategic Compass. This administrator may be responsible for representing the department in the absence of the Director.


Work Tasks:



  • Investigate and analyze complex student behaviors while adjudicating alleged violations of the Honor Code and Student Code of Conduct, including matters of academic integrity and student organization misconduct.

  • Use technology to maintain appropriate records and files of disciplinary cases in compliance with University policies and state/federal laws.

  • Serve as a System Administrator for Maxient, providing database oversight and management including ongoing training and support to system users.

  • Serve as an advisor to the Student Honor Council, one of the University's Anchor Organizations; responsible for recruiting, training, and advising members of this student-run organization.

  • Develop and facilitate intentional and proactive educational opportunities for the campus community about the Honor Code and decision-making.

  • Provide outreach and consultation to faculty, staff, students, and families through presentations and other creative multimedia efforts.

  • Collaborate with campus offices to ensure cohesive messaging and education for the campus community on expectations that support Christopher Newport University's community standards and resources to enhance student persistence, retention, and graduation.

  • Identifies, assists, and supports "at risk" students in collaboration with various campus offices (Accessibility and Care Team Support, Residence Life and Housing Administration, Dean of Students Office, etc).

  • Resolve challenging situations involving students through extensive interaction with students, parents, and both campus and off-campus stakeholders.

  • Assists in creating and updating assessment criteria to determine the impact of CHECS.

  • Implements formal assessment procedures based on these criteria. Authors departmental reports for distribution to leadership, and others as needed.

  • Supports the University as a member of appropriate division committees including but not limited to Student Update Meetings (SUM) and Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT).

  • Provide guidance and support, as needed, for Student Affairs professionals addressing, investigating, or adjudicating disciplinary issues.

  • Assists with campus-wide events and initiatives such as Orientation, Welcome Week, Move-In/Move-Out, Commencement Week activities, Admission Events, and other initiatives sponsored by the University.

  • Develop and maintain positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies including students, faculty, staff, parents/families, and guests.

  • Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude and treat everyone with dignity and respect.

  • Commitment to serving diverse student communities and responding to their unique needs.

  • Follow workplace safety regulations and adhere to applicable standards, processes, and programs established for your position.

  • Immediately report unsafe work conditions and work-related incidents to your supervisor and participate in accident investigation requests.

  • This position is designated as a "responsible employee" who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty.

Required Education:

Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree and related experience that equates to an advanced degree at the time of start date.


Additional Consideration - Education:

Master's degree in Higher Education or Student Personnel Administration, Counseling, Social Work or something similar


Experience Required:



  • Experience managing student or employee issues.

  • Experience with administrative processes, and interpreting complex policies and/or regulations.

  • Experience with conflict mediation and resolution options.

  • Experience planning or implementing educational programs or interventions that promote student learning.

  • Experience working with diverse student populations and prioritizing inclusive practices, relevant to higher education.


Additional Consideration - Experience:



  • Experience applying working knowledge of current educational practices and legal issues as they pertain to administration(Title IX, Clery Act, FERPA, VAWA).

  • Experience as a hearing officer in a university setting, including formal or informal resolution options.

  • Experience utilizing case management software.

  • Experience advising a student organization and/or supervising student employees.


Salary Information:

Starting at $56,800, commensurate with education and experience.
