Provides high level of operational leadership for laboratory animal activities and oversight of assigned staff members; provides direction and guidance on more complex laboratory animal procedures and/or processes.
Develops and maintains operating procedures and guidelines for animal care staff and facility users; ensures compliance per IACUC and other regulatory agencies; establishes business plans and long-term operational objectives, including ensuring compliance and quality assurance for laboratory animal processes and procedures and developing resource plans (facilities, staff, equipment).
Conducts a variety of escalated personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal; manages high level assignments and allocation resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that may involve staff in other departments/areas/teams.
Strategizes and optimizes use of laboratory animal resources (staff, facilities, equipment); optimizes space utilization and approves all facility renovations.
Makes budgetary recommendations/proposals based on financial analysis of facility/equipment usage and staff resource needs; reviews overall laboratory animal budget including cost models, makes recommendations, and ensures responsible and appropriate allocation of financial resources.
Reviews, updates, develops and/or implements various processes, policies and standard operating procedures (SOP's) for animal facility functions and animal care as needed to ensure animal care meets or exceeds all federal animal welfare regulations and guidelines, university policies, and accreditation standards; ensures that SOP's and policies are fully communicated to staff, implemented, and followed.
Conducts research on animal care regulations, policies and guidelines and implements new policies/processes to ensure compliance; stays up-to-date on emerging technologies, services, protocols/processes, and/or standards to improve laboratory animal research/education efforts; responsible for the implementation of new solutions/procedures to address business needs.
Prepares management reports and summaries for researchers, senior administration and/or various research committees; acts as advisor for laboratory animal operations; serves on various university committees and task forces related to laboratory animal research and/or education.
Develops and delivers papers and presentations to related professional associations and groups on behalf of the university as requested/needed.

Bachelor's degree preferably in science-related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
4 years of laboratory animal technician or related experience with animal husbandry and/or laboratory animal management
1 year of management experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire
AALAS Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification upon date of hire
Preferred
AALAS Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) certification or eligibility to become certified upon date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands
The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts.
