The Executive Director of Executive Communications will lead the strategic communication efforts for the Offices of the President and the Vice President for Strategic Operations (VPSO). This position will work collaboratively with the aforementioned offices and University Communications and Marketing (UCM) to build the university's reputation through high impact communications. This role is pivotal in shaping and conveying the vision, initiatives and messages to a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, media and the broader community within Indiana and beyond.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
Develops and executes comprehensive communication plans/strategies that align the Offices of the President and VPSO with the university's mission and IU 2030 strategic plan. The primary work will center on building IU's brand both internally and externally.
Crafts clear, compelling and consistent messages for videos, social media, speeches, statements, written communications, media outreach, etc.
Assists the IU media relations team with developing messages, response strategies, and stakeholder engagement.
Develops and executes sound social media strategy and content that reinforces key messaging.
Creates or collaborates on creation of high-quality content, including videos, speeches, op-eds, newsletters, social media posts and other communication materials as needed.
Leads the development and execution of crisis communication messaging as needed, anticipating and ensuring timely and effective responses to emerging issues in addition to crisis situations.
Fosters active and responsive relationships with key stakeholders, including university leadership, faculty, students, alumni, donors and external partners.
Develops and ensures effective branding across executive communications.
Coordinates with UCM to ensure all brand elements are maintained.
Monitors industry trends and best practices and strategically optimizes operations to enhance communications outcomes.
General Responsibilities
Independently creates basic and complex communications for print and e-distribution on behalf of department or large multi-faceted department and in support of departmental goals and objectives; communications may be interdepartmental; staff, faculty, or student-focused; or external.
Responds to inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of communications.
Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders and creates communications coverage for relevant initiatives, events, and programs.
Prepares communications timelines and shares progress of communications toward relevant deadlines with manager, team members, and other relevant constituents.
Regularly monitors relevant social media and news sites; researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty.
Utilizes various communications software programs and delivers communications in multiple formats to a variety of audiences.
Monitors industry trends and best practices and makes process and operational recommendations to manager.
Provides guidance to lower-level Communications Generalists.

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
