POSITION DETAILS

Per diem, no benefits; 24 hours per two week pay period; variable 12 hour shifts which could include days or night; weekend rotation. Minimum pay no less than $18 per hour, higher for experience, plus shift differentials ranging from $2.25 up to $5.50 more per hour depending on day of the week and the time of day.

JOB SUMMARY

Clerical

Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN), performs a variety of clerical duties associated with a Women’s Health (WH) patient care unit. The WH Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) will comply with objectives, standards and policies of the department and within the parameters of his or her scope of practice/preparation.

Clinical

Under the direct supervision of a RN the LPN or CNA performs assigned nursing care functions following hospital and nursing standards under the general supervision of the obstetrics director. This position requires employee to work within the scope of practice of their licensure or certification.

MAJOR JOB FUNCTION

Clerical

  • Maintains an orderly and businesslike environment at the nursing station in order to assist members of the health care team in the performance of their jobs despite high stress factors.
  • Prepares and maintains computer information.
  • Stickers, assembles, completes and processes patient’s charts as indicated. Maintains an accurate clinical record, recording information accurately per hospital policy.
  • May be responsible for audits done on charts daily for incomplete or missing documentation.
  • Communicates with members of the health team, patients and visitors using verbal and written means utilizing equipment such as telephone, paging system, and computer.
  • Attends staff meetings at least 80% of the time. Reads and acknowledges all meeting minutes of those not in attendance.
  • Maintains a good working relationship among all nursing unit personnel and other hospital employees through appropriate communication. Willing to identify problems and participate in problem solving process. Demonstrates the ability to evaluate suggestions and criticism objectively.
  • Accepts reassignment as needed to provide necessary coverage for all patient care units.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in regards to the computer documentation of patient cares and any other related computerized patient information/documentation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Clinical

  • The LPN or CNA will always function under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. Direct supervision means immediate availability to continually coordinate, direct and inspect firsthand the practice of another (N6.02 (6) WI Adm. Code). The Registered Nurse may delegate any act within the scope of professional nursing to the LPN or CNA, providing the Registered Nurse does the following:
    • Delegates tasks commensurate with educational preparation and demonstrated abilities of the Nurse Intern.
    • Provides direction and assistance to the LPN or CNA
    • Observes and monitors the activities of the LPN or CNA
    • Evaluates the effectiveness of acts performed by the LPN or CNA
    • Assesses and evaluates patients and patient care.
  • The LPN or CNA shall not perform the functions of patient assessment, receiving MD orders, ordering prescriptions, and providing primary education. Those responsibilities MUST be done in conjunction with the Registered Nurse
  • This role also functions as the CNA and attends deliveries, assists with procedures, performs hygiene cares, and housekeeping tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within his/her scope of practice.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Current and valid Wisconsin LPN license

OR

  • Successful completion of Certified Nursing Assistant program and current certification of such
  • Current certification or eligibility to become BLS certified
  • Medical Terminology knowledge required

SKILLS

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Excellent human relation skills as demonstrated by the ability to interface positively with all customers and employees.
  • Must complete EMAR training, medication safety class, and maintain ongoing competency.
  • Must acquire the knowledge and maintain established competency levels to perform all other essential duties.
  • Must have proficient computer skills with the ability to operate within a Windows environment.
  • Must have the ability to work with frequent interruptions, under stress and with minimal supervision.
  • Needs to possess as high level of intelligence and integrity, sense of responsibility and ability to comprehend and analyze details.
  • Ability to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment.
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for infant through geriatric patients.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and talk and hear.
  • Is frequently required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms.
  • Is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Good hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound.
  • Visual acuity is needed to assess color changes, to verify accuracy of written materials.
  • Computer/keyboard skills required. Must have the ability to operate in a Windows environment.
