Job Description:

Nemours is seeking a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist (PICU), Full-Time, to join our Nemours Children's Health team in Orlando, Florida.

Schedule is primarily a Monday-Friday schedule.

This position is responsible for providing and coordinating specialty Pharmacy Services within the Pharmacy Department at Nemours Children's Hospital. The clinical pharmacy specialist will be responsible for clinical and distributive activities in the assigned area of practice. This position works closely with the medical staff, nursing staff, and pharmacy staff to develop and maintain services that utilize the pharmacist's drug knowledge base to improve patient care, reduce cost, reduce medication errors, and improve efficiencies. The clinical pharmacy specialist will develop, implement, monitor and review Pharmacy Services specific to their specialty area of practice.


  • Reviews, interprets, and verifies medication orders for accuracy using sound principles, accounting for pharmacology of the drug, pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic variations in drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination with responsibility for establishing and continually improving the delivery of pharmaceutical care to patients within areas of direct responsibility and assisting others in the department with the same.
  • Consults, educates and works cooperatively with internal customers (e.g. members of the pharmacy staff, medical staff, clinical staff, research staff, nursing staff, and informatics staff) concerning information on medications, therapeutic evaluations, and drug protocols. Develops and provides drug information material. Meets and/or coordinates with medical and/or personnel to resolve problems related to Clinical Pharmacy Services in their specialty area of practice.
  • Provide specialized pharmaceutical services with a focus on critical care to improve drug usage and therapeutic outcomes including advising physicians and practitioners on issues concerning drug therapy in both the hospital and clinic settings, the inherent toxicity of drugs, drug-drug, drug-food interactions and side effects, as well as assisting in the prescribing of appropriate doses.
  • Assists the Clinical Pharmacy Manager in maintaining compliance with Joint Commission and other regulatory standards. Assists in the development and maintenance of performance measures, reports and statistics. Effects change as needed to improve services provided and assures compliance with regulatory requirements and protocols.
  • Develops quality improvement projects and participates in the quality improvement and medication use review activities of the department. Collects data; monitors processes; maintain logs, records, and other documentation as assigned.
  • Provides clinical support for multidisciplinary committees, including the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, through the development of materials to support clinical evaluation of drugs, procedures, and processes including the coordination and reporting of adverse drug reaction reporting, pharmacist interventions and other quality initiatives, within areas of direct responsibility. Promotes the use of the Nemours Children's Hospital drug formulary by converting non-formulary orders to formulary alternatives when clinically appropriate. Coordinates procurement of non-formulary drugs when necessary.
  • Supports clinical staff pharmacist education and training associated with core competencies and performance review.
  • Participates in policy, procedure, and order set development for the pediatric population.
  • Oversees activities of pharmacy technicians and mentors pharmacists-in-training including but not limited to Pharmacy Practice Residents, School of Pharmacy clerkship students; activities include both practical and didactic experiences.
  • Able to maintain punctual attendance consistent with Nemours policies, regulatory, and federal, state, and local standards.
  • Work with other NCH colleagues to engage the patient and their family in medication discussions, planning and educational sessions to support Patient and Family Centered Care.


Job Requirements

  • PharmD with PGY-1 residency and 5 years hospital experience or preferably PharmD with PGY-2 specialized residency training required.
  • A pharmacy practice residency may be considered as candidate having approximately 3 years' work experience maximum regardless of number of residencies.
  • Currently licensed by the State of Florida or legally eligible required.
  • Board Certification in Pediatrics preferred.
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification required within 30 days of hire.
  • Knowledge and experience with Pediatric unit dose drug distribution systems.
  • Unit dose training, IV, and TPN experience. Drug Storage, Distribution, and Automation Technology Systems.
  • EPIC experience preferred, Pyxis experience preferred, good working knowledge of infusion pump technology preferred.
