The purpose of this program is to introduce students pursing veterinary related careers (DVM or LVT) who are interested in opportunities in a research setting. The opportunities include a Large Animal/Food Animal experience in Richland/Kalamazoo MI, a Laboratory Animal Medicine experience in Richland/Kalamazoo, MI. In Richland/Kalamazoo the species there include rodents, poultry, dogs, cats, swine, dairy and beef cattle, small ruminants and equine. Successful applicants have the ability to focus on species of interest.
Internship Job Duties:
The intern will work closely with ARS clinical veterinarians and technicians during their daily tasks including: treatment of clinical cases, study related support, and ensuring the welfare of all animals.
The student will offer support to the local research effort by providing animal husbandry, necropsy support, sample acquisition, handling, and submission, and aid in development of training programs.
The student will be involved with protocol review/writing, IACUC attendance and will meet with scientists in VMRD to learn basic study design and biometrics.
The student will be introduced to the regulations involved with using animals in research, including but not limited to the Animal Welfare Act, IACUC, and CFR part 21.
Internship Qualifications:
Qualified candidate should have completed one to two years of graduate education with a focus on veterinary or LVT training and have an interest in clinical veterinary medicine, preventative medicine and/or research.
• Enrolled in a veterinary or LVT program during the Spring term preceding internship
• At least 18 years of age and authorized to work in the U.S.
• Successfully pass a background check and drug screen
• Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, problem solving & analytical skills
The following hourly pay rates reflect the anticipated base pay for this position:
If the selected candidate is a student pursuing an Associate-level degree: $16.00 per hour
If the selected candidate is a student pursuing an Undergraduate-level degree: $20.00 per hour
If the selected candidate is a student pursing a Graduate-level degree: $32.50 per hour
If the selected candidate is a student pursuing a Doctorate-level degree: $36.00 per hour
The following hourly pay rates reflect the anticipated base pay for this position if a selected candidate were to be located in California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Illinois (Chicago area), Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington (Seattle area):
