The purpose of Instruction and Classroom Support Technician 2 (ICST2) is to provide professional and technical support for laboratory and classroom activities within the Pure & Applied Science, mainly chemistry teaching programs. ICST's support the Division's mission by working collaboratively with faculty and other techs to manage scientific program delivery by preparing and setting-up course materials and equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and successful scientific demonstrations, activities, and experiments in both the classroom and laboratory.


This position is a classified, 32 hour per week, 11 months per year position and eligible for overtime.


Shift: Mon. - Fri. 8:00 am - 3:00 pm,

This is an ongoing eleven month position from September 16 to August 15This is an .80 FTE position (32 hours per week)May include some nights/weekends to accommodate lab course needs
Salary Information: The above salary range reflects the starting step of Range 44 (Step A) for this classified position and includes a 5% King County compensation provision. As a new employed classified employee, based on annual increments, it will take 5.5 years to reach (Step L) and 11.5 years to reach (Step M) on the salary schedule. This does not reflect any contractual changes, legislative mandated salary increases or Cost of Living Increases (COLA's) that may be approved in the future. Essential Tasks


Reporting to the Instruction and Classroom Support Technician 4 in the Chemistry department , this position will:


Activities:




Provide direct support for science classes with and without laboratory components as needed for safe, efficient and successful operations of science curricula



  • Working collaboratively with instructors to prepare materials, equipment, instruments, and logistics for specific classes as assigned on a quarterly basis to ensure safe, efficient and successful operation of the program;

    • Preparing materials, solutions, equipment, and other items needed for instructional demonstrations;

    • Preparing solutions, equipment, and other items needed for laboratory activities and experiments;

    • Restocking supplies in prep and lab rooms per weekly schedule and as needed or directed in the interim;

    • Checking completed tasks off on prep sheets, initial, and making notes recording any changes, adjustments, substitutions or problems.




  • Setting-up and taking-down equipment, instruments, and materials/supplies used in laboratory experiments and classroom demonstrations for specific classes to ensure safe, efficient and successful operations and meet course outcomes;

    • Assisting in managing consumables by making notes in prep book and notifying supervisor about low supplies;

    • Checking dry erase markers and resurfacing dry erase boards;

    • Disposing of waste materials or collecting biological/chemical waste for proper hazardous disposal per lab procedure;

    • Cleaning and checking proper operation/usability of all equipment and instruments used in a chemistry program;

    • Returning all items to the correct storage location or taking expired and broken/malfunctioning items to prep room for disposal, repair or replacement. Updating inventory promptly as needed to ensure team stays informed of any actions taken;

    • Checking items against prep sheet for missing or misplaced items, and notifying supervisor if not found.



  • Maintaining prep rooms, laboratory spaces, classrooms, and other areas in a safe, clean/disinfected, and organized condition at all times to set a good example for students, to reduce hazards and to ensure efficient operations;

    • Disposing of lab waste and emptying sharps and broken glass bins as needed to reduce hazards;

    • Emptying any material left in used glassware into appropriate disposal container and pre-washing the glassware to remove grease, solutions, soil and other solids before putting into and running dishwasher to ensure glassware is clean and reduce wear on dishwasher;

    • Returning clean & dry items from dishwasher or drying racks to proper storage location according to inventories and shelf labelling;

    • Defrosting lab freezers and cleaning fridge as needed if mold or spoilage noted;

    • Checking first aid and chemical spill kits, eyewashes, safety showers and fire extinguishers in each lab regularly.



  • Performing the duties of an Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 1 as needed to meet program outcomes and changing lab needs;

  • Advising instructors of potential problems with existing program, supplies, equipment, instruments, or materials;

  • Supervising students conducting laboratory work or developing lab skills outside of scheduled class time only. Also, may assist instructor with supervision as needed during scheduled class time if other duties have been fulfilled and work schedule permits.

  • Actively promote laboratory safety

    • Encouraging awareness of and overseeing the proper use of facilities and safe practices by students, faculty, and other staff to promote safety;

    • Monitoring laboratories to ensure compliance with department safety policies and to provide immediate support if needed;

    • Assisting as needed to fully support and develop safe and efficient laboratory procedures to the highest professional and technical standards possible;

    • Responding according to established safety and standard operating procedures as needed to urgent situations that arise and are or could become a safety problem.


    Operate and maintain scientific equipment and instruments used in laboratory experiments and classroom demonstrations

    • Maintaining up-to-date and organized laboratory files with inventories of instruments and equipment along with their keys and procedure manuals to ensure safe and proper operation by all users;

    • Following standard procedures for receipt of new instruments and equipment by properly unpacking, labeling, and adding to computerized inventories including storage location to ensure efficient program operations;

    • Performing routine checks, cleaning, maintenance and minor repairs of equipment and instruments on a regular schedule, when needed, and/or as directed by a supervisor to ensure they operate per specifications when needed for an experiment or demonstration;

    • Notifying supervisor promptly of equipment or instruments removed from the classroom when broken or failed to operate properly to ensure timely arrangement for repairs or replacements;

    • Provide instruction to students, other staff, and faculty in safe and proper operation of equipment and instruments as needed to ensure successful program operations.


    Assist in maximizing laboratory budget and controlling inventory to maintain adequate quantities and quality of supplies necessary to support efficient operations and reduce waste



    • Estimates quantity and quality of supplies and materials needed; orders equipment and supplies for the course; follows through with purchasing department or procurement of supplies; maintains adequate stock levels;

    • Maintaining up-to-date and organized laboratory files consisting of computerized inventories of consumable and reusable supplies and other materials stocked for use in the scientific program to maintain adequate quantities to support efficient operations;

    • Checking for and removing expired, obsolete, and spoiled items from storage. Updating counts in the inventories and notifying supervisor of disposal to ensure timely replacement;

    • Following established procedures for receipt of stock by properly unpacking, labeling, and adding to computerized inventories of supplies and materials including quantity, storage location, and SDS information if applicable to control inventory, support operations, and reduce waste;

    • Notifying supervisor when stock levels fall below adequate threshold level to ensure more stock can be ordered and delivered by the time it's needed;

    • Researching possible substitutions as directed or needed for budget and/or inventory control.


    Work collaboratively with faculty and other support staff as a team to ensure safe, efficient and successful operation of the science program

    • Prioritizing projects and multi-tasking in a way that provides the best, safest, and most efficient program possible;

    • Communicating with team members via email, in person, and/or phone in a timely, respectful and professional manner to ensure program is fully supported by notifying team members as soon as possible of planned or unplanned absences and emergencies;

    • Working collaboratively by asking other team members for help and helping them when needed to ensure successful operations;

    • Deploying interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, and patience to work effectively with team members, students, faculty, and other staff from diverse backgrounds;

    • Performing additional other duties including providing secondary support to team members or other science labs as needed or directed to meet safety and program outcomes;

    • Assisting in training new student workers in laboratory procedures, maintenance and safety by overseeing their work and coaching as needed;

    • May teach laboratory portion of selected classes.


    Continue to develop professionally, and perform other general duties, as required to best support and meet changing program needs



    • Participating in professional development opportunities to expand knowledge of discipline-related materials, procedures, techniques, protocols, etc.;

    • Performing other general duties and providing secondary support to other science lab programs as needed to meet program needs.


    Ability to:


    • Demonstrate proficiency with a variety of computer programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) with ability to increase skills and knowledge as needed;

    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;

    • Work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.

    Qualifications



    • Bachelor's degree with major study in chemistry;


    OR

    • Equivalent education/experience.


    Working Conditions:

    • Ability to lift to 30 lbs.;

    • Current driver's license;

    • Ability to work on feet for an extended period;

    • Willing to work with potentially hazardous materials and chemicals;

    • Ability to work some night/weekend hours as needed to accommodate lab course needs.


    Desired:

    • Strong background in chemistry or environmental science also being desirable.

    • Experience in preparing solutions and proper storage of chemical stock and disposal of chemical waste.

    • One-year experience as Instructional and Classroom Support Technician 1.

    • Familiarity with common undergraduate chemistry laboratory equipment.

    • Supervisory experience.

    • Knowledge of or certification in laboratory safety.

    • Experience in managing inventories

    • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize projects
