PAY GRADE: 29ECONTEXT OF THE JOB:Under general supervision of the Manager, Composite Technology, the Lab Coordinator I is a specialized research position that works closely with faculty, research staff, and students (graduate, undergraduate) to support, facilitate and coordinate operational activities for the Center for Composite Materials (CCM), a soft-funded research center within the College of Engineering with annual research expenditures over $17M. The Lab Coordinator I coordinates activities, provides support services and performs a variety of complex technical laboratory duties. The principal emphasis is on working independently in support of composite materials research activities and establishing and implementing operating procedures. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:• Coordinate operational activities in research laboratories, providing support services to researchers, faculty, students, and technicians.• Coordinate laboratory maintenance; inspecting, repairing, and maintaining equipment.• Coordinate the ordering, inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies, lab ware, and instruments essential to the operation of the lab.• Fabricate composite components, structures, and test article per instructions.• Develop and implement policies, procedures, and standards for lab operations to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality control of the laboratory and compliance with federal, State, and university regulations and standards.• Machine shop management and training.• Maintenance of MSDS Master list; chemical management and inventory.• Coordinate hazardous waste disposal.• Assist with capital property inventory, tagging, and disposal.• Manage Fixit and Movers Requests as needed.• Perform forklift maintenance and operation.• Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS:• Bachelor’s degree in a related technical, scientific, or engineering discipline and two years of technical/administrative experience in laboratory operations or equivalent combination of education and experience.• Experience in composites manufacturing is preferred.• Experience with research laboratory operations or product manufacturing.• Ability to work independently and conduct daily operations in accordance with research plans and schedules.• Ability to create and execute project plans, staff, and equipment scheduling, and set manufacturing practices.• Effective oral and written communication skills.• Ability to oversee and train others in composites manufacturing related tasks.• Knowledge of laboratory techniques, procedures, and instrumentation.• Mechanical aptitude including working with hand and machine tools preferred.• Machine shop and/or CAD experience or operation of automated computer driven ply cutting equipment a plus.• Proficient computing skills; Excel, database, word processing software, etc.• Ability to work independently from oral and/or written instructions.• Ability to accept and complete specific independent tasks to contribute to a team effort.• Ability to work well with people of all age and diverse backgrounds.• Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.• Committed to fostering a workplace culture of belonging, where diversity is celebrated and equity is a core value.• Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.• Committed to fostering a workplace culture of belonging, where diversity is celebrated, and equity is a core value.
