Job Summary



The Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering is seeking an academic advisor to join our undergraduate advising team. This advisor may advise for Informatics, Computer Science, and/or Data Science, as well as students interested in pursuing and/or transferring to a computer science or data science degree.


Department-Specific Responsibilities


  • Advises students through in-person, telephone, virtual, and drop-in appointments.

  • Assists students with understanding degree structure and purpose, degree requirements, course sequencing, and time-to-degree.

  • Engages students in long-term academic and professional planning, focusing on individual student success strategies; and analyzing their success in meeting their academic and professional objectives.

  • Advises students of relevant IU and school policies related to academic progress, enrollment, and graduation.

  • Completes time to degree evaluations, graduation audits, senior checks, transfer course evaluations, focusing on student goals, objectives and realistic outcomes.

  • Provides the first level of appeal on questions pertaining to advising exceptions and course evaluations.

  • Supports efforts to create strategic recommendations on delivery of academic advising services based on current research, best practices, and trends in advising.

  • Supports the use of technology in the delivery of academic advising.

  • Ensures Luddy advising is implementing advising and technology initiatives that align with university expectations and goals.

  • Engages in research, contributing to the academic advising profession.

  • Engages in routine advising practices (degree exceptions, substitutions, petitions, system-related issues, student records issues, major/minor declarations, and transfer coursework evaluations, etc.)

  • Understands school and campus student support resources and refers students when appropriate.

  • Assists with new student orientation and onboarding advising activities.

  • Engages in retention efforts. Monitors student performance and well-being through the student engagement roster and interactions with students. Engages in outreach and support efforts.

  • Works closely with the Director of UGRD Advising, Director of Undergraduate Studies, faculty, and all Luddy Student Services Offices.

  • Maintains confidentiality and FERPA compliance.

  • All other duties as assigned

General Responsibilities


  • Provides academic counseling for students pursuing or considering majors, minors, or certificates. Guides students in planning their course of study in concert with the departments' curricular requirements; explains curriculum requirements and school and campus policies.

  • Meets with students in groups and 1-on-1 to guide students in academic programs that will meet their educational needs and the requirements of their chosen major, minor, and/or certificate.

  • Assists students in making informed decisions about a choice of major and potential career or graduate school direction; helps students to assess their interests, values, and academic skills and to understand these in relation to major choice and potential future career/graduate school options.

  • Teaches students how to navigate university systems, academic processes, and policies; empowers student accountability in academic decisions about courses, career direction, and long-term plans; and provides guidance on avenues for increased involvement as an IU student and in the IU community.

  • Refers students to appropriate campus resources, such as academic support resources, placement programs, internship and overseas study opportunities, etc.

  • Tracks and monitors students' academic progress, reviews and maintains confidential student records to ensure that students meet requirements and to document advising discussions, and communicates this information in a timely manner to students and to appropriate academic offices when necessary.

  • Represents the advising function as a presenter at campus meetings and recruiting functions; assists in developing written advising materials for use in student events.

  • Researches, recommends, or creates best practices for unit or campus initiatives, projects, processes, or programs and may provide guidance to other Academic Advisors.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.


EDUCATION



Required



  • Master's degree in related field

WORK EXPERIENCE



Required



  • 2 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or related field.


Preferred



  • Experience in a student-focused, higher education environment is highly desired.

  • 3 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or related field

Working Conditions / Demands



This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Work Hours



Typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00AM - 5:00PM


Occasional evening and weekend work is required.
