Overview
This role is strategic, dynamic, and responsible for providing coordination and contributions to the strategic optimization of Medical Affairs across the five functional areas (US, Japan, and EMEA Regional Teams; Global Medical Strategy, Scientific Communication & Publications; HEOR; Global Medical Excellence; and Medical Information). As a key contributor and collaborator, the Director will assist in the development and execution of consistent and cohesive tactical plans for the five functional areas ensuring alignment with overall Corporate objectives and collaborate with Medical Affairs Excellence in the development of metrics to assess progress and impact of the Medical Affairs. This role involves seamless communication and coordination across the functional medical areas and other internal stakeholders to ensure strategic alignment and consistency of Medical Affairs activities. This dynamic role requires the ability to analyze situations, identify gaps, synthesize recommendations, and lead/contribute to special projects and cross functional process optimization initiatives, including implementation of best practices and ultimately fostering a culture of continuous improvement and process optimization within the medical department. This role requires a combination of program management, leadership by influence, strategic thinking, change management, and deep knowledge of modern Medical Affairs remit as well as the pharmaceutical industry's regulatory landscape.
Responsibilities
Medical Affairs Strategic Optimization:
Contribute to the development and implementation of new/enhanced standards, tools, and templates to help Medical Teams be more efficient and effective, ensuring timelines and milestones are met.
Propose new ways of working by applying knowledge of Industry trends and best practices with an assessment of internal processes and functional capabilities.
Identify lessons learned and best practices through evaluation of processes and methodologies.
Define key business questions, analyze data and trends, identify opportunities for optimization, and develop process improvement plans.
Collaborate cross-functionally with the regional and global medical teams and contribute to the definition of the required resources to support successful completion of initiatives.
Strategic Planning, and Measurement:
Partner with the Medical Affairs Leadership Team (MALT) and the Business Partners to develop consistent and cohesive tactical plans, internal medical affairs team annual engagement & communication plans (e.g. Medical Affairs Town Halls), and quarterly business reviews (QBRs).
Look for areas of optimization and lead development and presentation of business cases, summarizing the situation, opportunity, cost, expected value returned, and anticipated challenges or risks.
Collaboration, Communication, and Coordination:
Work with Medical Affairs and Cross-Functional Stakeholders to improve business outcomes by identifying pain points or inefficiencies and leading solution generation and implementation.
Work with SVP, Medical Affairs to create and manage Optimization and Medical team engagement & communication roadmap.
Facilitate communication between all MALT members, Partners, and other internal stakeholders, ensuring transparency, efficient information flow, and that the SVP's directives are clearly communicated and implemented.
Leadership:
As a MALT Member, contribute: (1) to the identification of key areas of focus for optimization; (2) to the development of department objectives; (3) to the alignment of medical initiatives with overall Corporate objectives; (4) to the definition of metrics to assess the impact and progress of Medical Affairs activities and deliverables to the organization.
Serve as a MALT member on strategic decision-making teams. Utilize negotiation skills, cultural sensitivity/awareness, and technical knowledge to win support and cooperation from other functional areas and influence decision making.
Medical Affairs Governance:
Partner with the SVP and appropriate stakeholders, such as Global Medical Excellence Executive Director, to develop, optimize, and implement medical governance and procedures.
Ensure teams are aware of evolving industry regulations and guidelines to ensure compliance.
Play a critical role in the Medical Affairs modernization and transformation while building out strong high-performing teams.
Establish and implement Medical Affairs communication plan that provides organization with Medical Affairs changes, transformation successes, and high-visibility contributions.
Position Requirements (Required and/or Preferred Skills, Experience, and Education) :
15+ years of progressive industry/relevant professional experience.
10+ years active work in Medical Affairs.
Track record of being successful in fast-paced, dynamic environment; must be self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision.
Foresight of areas for growth, improvement, refinement, and potential risks.
Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
Ability to manage external vendors and provide clear, concise direction.
Ability to effectively lead by influence, motivate, and ensure compliance across the department.
Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Smartsheet, and other analytical tools.
Highly organized with a strong attention to detail, clarity, accuracy, and conciseness.

Travel:
Domestic and/or international travel required (minimum of 20%).

Salary Range
$179,000 - $250,800 a year
