SUMMARY

Under the supervision of a Nurse, the Patient Care Tech is cross-trained in the role of Unit Secretary and Nursing Assistant. Based on the needs of the department, responsibilities are a combination of providing direct patient care and technical assistance to the nurse and performing a variety of computer, clerical, scheduling, and supply functions as necessary for the operation of the unit. Compliance with rules and regulations of all applicable federal, state and local laws as well as PMHC policies is a condition of employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Incumbent must have the skills, ability and judgment to perform the following essential job duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation:

Assists in the collection of assessment data such as vital signs and intake/output. Subjective and objective data are reported to nursing staff.Provides care that meets the patients activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, repositioning, and ambulating for patients of all ages.Collects laboratory specimens.Creates and maintains a comfortable and safe environment for patients, families, and visitors. Organizes and maintains the patient record.Notifies personnel as delegated by nursing staff/charge nurse.Answers telephones and call lights and refers them to the appropriate personnel. Transports patients and/or families from the unit.Maintains clerical and patient supplies on the unit.If the Patient Care Tech has completed a Basic EKG course, he/she may be responsible for notifying nursing personnel of changes on Telemetry.May assist with other tasks once competency has been established. These items include but are not limited to, bladder scanning, obtaining EKGs, Accu Checks or any other tasks delegated and competency has been confirmed.If working in Same Day Services, completes patients scrub prep for surgery.Maintains patient and employee confidentiality at all times.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Directly responsible to the Director of Inpatient Nursing/ Director of Surgical Services.

While performing the duties of this job, employees the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock. The employee occasionally works with explosive, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

The level of risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens is Classification (I), as outlined in the Hepatitis B Vaccine Program Policy.

REQUIRED EDUCATION

1. High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.)

2. Current certification as a Nursing Assistant.

COMPETENCIES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

1. Current BLS certification must be obtained within 90 days from date of hire.

2. Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
