Department Summary


The Department of Learning Technologies, housed in the College of Information at UNT, serves as a dynamic center for advancing the study and application of learning technologies. UNT, recognized as a Tier One research university by the Carnegie Classification, offers 114 bachelor's, 87 master's, and 39 doctoral programs, many of which have earned national and international recognition.


The College of Information, founded in 2008 by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, is a proud member of the iSchools and iCaucus. The college fosters a learner-centered environment, connecting information, people/learners, organizations, languages, learning, design, and technology.


As one of four departments within the College of Information, the Department of Learning Technologies offers a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS), a Master of Science (MS), and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Learning Technologies, along with a Graduate Academic Certificate in Instructional Design & Technology. Our graduate programs attract professionals from diverse fields, including K-12 and higher education, e-learning, instructional design and development, learning technologies, human resources, workforce leadership and human performance improvement, and organizational development.


Our faculty are renowned for their interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary approaches to teaching and research, with a distinguished record of scholarship and funding. Position Overview


The Department of Learning Technologies at the University of North Texas (UNT) invites applications for a nine-month tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, starting in August 2025. A typical tenure-track faculty member's workload includes 40% Research, 40% Teaching, and 20% Service, with a 2-2 teaching load each fall and spring, and optional summer teaching opportunities.


We seek candidates with a Ph.D. in Learning Design and Technologies, Instructional Systems Design, Learning Sciences, or a related field that complements our current faculty's strengths. Ideal candidates will contribute to UNT's commitment to advancing educational technology through innovative instructional design and technology integration. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in various formats (online, hybrid, and in-person) and advising doctoral students, with an emphasis on the following areas:


* Knowledge of educational technology learning theory and technology acceptance models
* Application of instructional design theories and learning sciences to create engaging, technology-enhanced learning environments
* Expertise in advanced instructional design using authoring tools such as Adobe Suite, Captivate 360, and Articulate Storyline, for developing interactive learning experiences
* Proficiency in game-based learning and interactive simulations, with foundational programming knowledge to design immersive learning experiences
* Design and evaluation of emerging technologies (e.g., AI, adaptive learning systems, learning analytics) across various educational or training contexts, including K-12, higher education, and corporate training


Successful candidates are expected to conduct research in one or more of the following areas: user/learner-centered experience design, game-based learning, virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality, and "maker" learning (e.g., makerspaces, 3-D printing) across various learning contexts (e.g., K-12, higher education, corporate training, informal learning).


The successful candidate will exhibit the ability to produce high-quality research, seek grant funding, and integrate advanced technologies in diverse learning settings.



Minimum Qualifications



  • Hold a doctorate in learning design and technologies or an equivalent doctoral degree in a related field (e.g., learning sciences, human-computer interaction, information sciences) by August 2025.

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of learning theories and solid foundation of instructional design and development .

  • Ability to stay current with evolving technology skills for teaching and research to keep pace with the rapidly changing digital landscape.

  • Demonstrate advanced expertise in designing, developing, and integrating instructional design tools.

  • Demonstrate a track record of peer-reviewed research presentations and publications.

  • Possess research competence to conduct empirical research projects independently and collaboratively with colleagues and doctoral students.

  • Demonstrate commitment to seeking grant funding.

  • Possess curriculum design expertise and exemplary teaching experience at both undergraduate and graduate levels in advanced learning technologies.
