Position Summary:

This position will lead the university's Employee Relations function by serving as a trusted advisor, strategic partner, and subject matter expert for the university in the areas of employee relations, performance management, workplace disputes, and investigations. Position will manage the Employee Relations function dedicated to reviewing, addressing and resolving job performance and work-related issues. The position will provide coaching and guidance on employee relations issues, concerns, or difficulties and provide confidential support to management, HR business partners, and staff in all employee relations matters, working closely with legal counsel and key stakeholders in determining the appropriate course of action. This position reports to the Chief People Officer.

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree or substantive Employee Relations experience

  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate and assess potential risks and problems with the ability to formulate solution options and make sound judgments to limit any adverse effects to the university and associates.

  • Ability to develop excellent working relationships and establish personal credibility with individuals at every level of the university.

  • Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations, especially related to employment and employee relations.

  • Demonstrates excellent organizational with superior communication skills (both verbal and written).

  • Leadership skills that promote dedication, creativity, innovation, and growth

  • Understanding of and commitment to diversity and inclusion principles and practices.

  • Strong presentation and written communication

  • Problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.

  • Understanding of best practice human resource programs and development methodologies.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions for reporting purposes.

  • Experienced in mediation and/or arbitration process.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Knowledge of Banner and Cornerstone

  • Experience with the Commonwealth of Virginia grievance system

  • HR certifications such as PHR, SHRM, SPHR, IPMA

Advertised Pay Range:

Up to $110,000 commensurate with experience


Advertised Pay Range Statement:

All hiring rates are commensurate with relevant experience up to the advertised amount considering internal alignment.
