Department Information



The mission of Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) is to provide high quality, humane care for research and teaching animals at Indiana University Bloomington, and ensure compliance with federal laws and guidelines and campus policies related to animal use.


LAR is responsible for managing the campus core animal facilities and providing medical care and oversight for all campus facilities in which animals are maintained for research and teaching.



Job Summary



Department-Specific Responsibilities


  • Assists with the daily clinical and preventative medicine program for LAR, including weekends and after-hours on-call as scheduled.

  • May be an alternate member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

  • Responsible for the daily clinical and preventative medical program of Lab Animal Resources (LAR). He/she is responsible for examining, diagnosing, treating, or consulting on clinical, behavioral, or husbandry issues with all animals on campus.

  • Ensures that appropriate forms and documentation related to clinical cases are maintained.

  • Participates in on-call duties with other veterinary staff, assessing and treating animal health emergencies during office hours, after hours, weekends and holidays.

  • Performs duties as an alternate veterinary member of the BIACUC. Duties include veterinary review of protocols, attending BIACUC meetings, and participating in facility inspections as necessary.

  • Provides training to investigators and research staff on dosing, blood and tissue collection, surgery, anesthesia, analgesia, humane endpoints and clinical outcome or prognosis on clinical cases.

  • Oversees procedures being conducted on animals to ensure that the procedure is being performed correctly.




Qualifications



EDUCATION



Required



  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

WORK EXPERIENCE



Required



  • 2 years experience in private clinical practice or laboratory animal science and medicine

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES



Required



  • License to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Indiana

SKILLS

  • Proficient communication skills
