General Summary

GTI Energy, the nation’s leading research, development, deployment (RD&D), and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for an experienced analyst and project manager in our Research & Engineering group.  The qualified candidate will execute Building Energy Efficiency R&D projects in collaboration with technical staff, including fuel-fired, thermally driven, and renewable technologies. This work will involve technical and economic assessments of emerging technologies to evaluate performance, resilience, economic and environmental impacts in both laboratory and field deployment settings. The qualified candidate will also engage in market analysis research and support field-testing activities.

Work Location

The position will be based in the Chicagoland area at the GTI Energy Headquarters. We offer a hybrid/core work week, where employees are remote Mondays and Fridays, and required to be on-site Tuesday through Thursday.

Primary Responsibilities


  • Lead project teams as a project manager and a technical contributor. Work effectively with technical staff, manufacturers, contractors, and end users at field sites while meeting project timelines and budgets.

  • Be a “quick study” with new emerging energy-related technologies. Develop in-depth technical understanding with an awareness of standards, economics and applicable markets.

  • Perform due diligence on emerging technologies to evaluate energy savings, emissions reduction, lifecycle costs, and non-economic benefits.

  • Develop test plans to evaluate promising technologies in both laboratory and field studies. Specify instrumentation and data acquisition systems to monitor technology performance.

  • Use modeling and software tools to analyze data, summarize results, and report findings.

  • Support proposal development and identify new technical and/or business areas.

  • Demonstrate technical expertise with strong written and presentation skills. Author technical papers and participate in industry conferences.

  • Demonstrate that internal and external customers are a high priority; show willingness to go the extra mile.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics


  • Fundamental knowledge of building energy systems (HVAC, water heating, electrical, building envelope) and related codes & standards. Familiarity with the design and testing of mechanical and ventilation equipment, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems. Experience with military or federal facilities is a plus.

  • Demonstrated hands-on skills in a field environment, with a focus on residential and commercial HVAC and water heating systems, distributed energy systems and/or renewable energy systems.

  • Experience with data acquisition, instrumentation and controls, or programming is also a plus.

  • Strong communication and technical writing skills and ability to convey information to both technical and general audiences.

  • Ability to work effectively in small teams and independently.

  • Occasional travel for industry events, field site visits, or pilot implementations.

 

Education and Experience


  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or similar and minimum of 5 years relevant work experience or M.S. and minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience.

  • Relevant Industry Certifications are a plus (Licensed PE, LEED AP, CEM, etc.).

  • Experience with project management (PMP certification) and multi-discipline collaborative experience preferred.

  • Your past professional experience in these areas is highly valued, but so are your personal abilities and willingness to learn. All candidates with the appropriate skill sets will be considered.

 

Pay Transparency

The salary range for this position is $85,000 - $110,000 USD annually. This salary range is GTI Energy’s good faith estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, GTI Energy’s business or organizational needs and an individual’s relevant experience, education, qualifications, certifications, skills, seniority, geographic location, and/or performance. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate, monthly rate, or annual salary only, and do not include bonus. The range listed is just one component of GTI Energy’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, paid time off, and region-specific benefits.
