William & Mary Foundation's defining and essential mission is to support the university's people and programs. Position Summary:
The William & Mary Foundation Accountant is an important member of the William & Mary Foundation accounting team. The WMF Accountant reports to the WMF Assistant Controller and is responsible for financial accounting and endowment accounting. These duties require the independent analysis/interpretation of financial data as well as the application of accounting theory and principles. The Accountant assists in preparation of the Foundation's financial statements and coordination of the annual audit and is also charged with the accounting and reporting for various assets and liabilities of the Foundation and its affiliated entities.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Examines and analyzes transactions and other data, interprets compliance with Foundation policies and procedures and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) to prepare accounting entries, spreadsheets and financial reports for audit, tax reporting and other internal and external reporting needs.
Performs endowment accounting functions.
Performs accounting for pledges, split interest agreements, bank and investment accounts, fixed assets and collections (art and antiques), debt and other asset and liability accounts.
Assists with evaluation, design, and implementation of internal controls over accounting and financial reporting.
Interacts broadly with internal and external constituencies on a wide range of matters.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field or the equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience directly related to the position.
Working knowledge of GAAP and generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS), particularly relating to not-for-profit entities.
Demonstrable experience with preparation of annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP, collaborating with external auditors on completion of the annual audit, and reconciling statements from banks, custodians, and investment advisors to the general ledger.
Knowledge of state and federal laws, IRS code, UPMIFA, and other regulations pertaining to not-for-profit organizations.
Analytical and problem-solving skills with the proven ability to independently interpret and apply principles guiding accounting and financial reporting.
Proficiency with a variety of software applications, particularly in MS Office, with advanced competency with Excel, automated accounting, enterprise, and report writing systems.
Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with the demonstrated ability to work as a strong collaborative team player, effectively communicating and professionally interacting with internal and external constituencies, exercising diplomacy, discretion, and sound judgment in all interactions.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently and successfully manage multiple projects with competing priorities while meeting tight deadlines.
Strong work ethic with dedicated commitment to performing at a high level contributing to a collegial team-oriented workplace.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in accounting, finance, business, or other closely related field.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
Experience with accounting for endowments and split-interest agreements such as charitable trusts and gift annuities.
Prior experience working with Workday, Fundriver, Ellucian Banner (Finance), and Qlik reporting software.
Experience with a non-profit higher education institution or a university-affiliated foundation.
