GroundskeeperDescription/Job Summary

This position maintains the upkeep of the grounds at Baltimore City Community College. To provide a safe, pleasant and well-maintained environment for students, staff and faculty. Employee must have a working knowledge of general care of grounds; of technique for cultivating, planting, moving and caring for lawns, gardens, shrubs and trees. Employee must have a working knowledge of and skills of assigned tools and equipment. Employee must have the ability to read, write/type and perform basic numerical calculation using a calculator and a computer. Employee must have the ability to understand and follow basic written and oral directions and the ability to communicate with a diverse population.

Responsibilities/Duties


Essential Functions:



  • Preforms all assigned grounds-related tasks in a professional manner in order to reflect he highest level of integrity of the facilities department and Baltimore City Community College.

  • Responsible for the removal of trash, leaves, refuse derides, from college grounds and buildings;

  • Maintain clean work area, repair or replace trash receptacles, clean and repair outdoor furniture, signs, and fences;

  • Perform mowing, trimming, and edging of the college lawns; irrigates plants, lawns, trees, flowers, and shrubs to ensure professional and quality landscaping.

  • Maintain organized work space, tools and equipment storage areas, and inventory of all products.

  • Maintain grounds and buildings in satisfactory conditions.

  • Assist with grounds keeping projects as assigned.

  • Participate as needed in removal of snow and ice, apply ice melting compounds as needed to insure safety and accessibility on campus.

  • Must be available for all inclement weather events and special assignments as required to clean curbs, gutters, parking areas, storms drains, holding ponds, storage areas, trucks, vans and grounds equipment, etc...

  • Performs routine maintenance of grounds as assigned by supervisor and all other duties as assigned.





    Required Skills


    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



    • 3-years' experience with a zero turn mower required.

    • Ability to do mathematical skills; add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measuring using whole numbers, common fractions, percentages, and decimals.

    • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write short correspondence, effectively present information in a one on one situations, to a small group, with customers and with other employees of the organization.

    • Ability to represent the college in a professional manner through written communication.

    • Ability to reason, understand, and carry out detailed instructions, written and oral. Ability to deal with diverse population of students, staff and faculty of the college in all surroundings and situations.



    Physical Demands:



    • Physical demands of the job described above must be able to me met to complete successfully preform the essential job functions.

    • While preforming the job functions the contractual employee will be frequently stand, walk, push, and pull equipment using varies parts of their body (ie.. hands, fingers, legs, back muscles) for extended periods of time.

    Required Qualifications


    Minimum Qualifications:



    • High School Diploma or GED

    • Two years' of demonstrated experience in groundskeeping services and a solid knowledge of tools and equipment.

    • Three years' experience driving a zero turn mower with two references.

    Preferred Qualifications


    Preferred:



    • Two years' experience in groundskeeping at an institution of higher education

    • Knowledge of general maintenance mechanics in troubleshooting and repairing equipment.
