Job Description:

Provide patient care for the inpatient and outpatient Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy (SCTCT) program in conjunction with the medical director, staff physicians, nursing staff, and other interdisciplinary team members to deliver and facilitate patient care and management throughout the healthcare system. The position includes caring for hospitalized patients admitted for transplant, cellular therapy, or complications, as well as providing outpatient care to pre- and post-transplant or cellular therapy patients with hematologic malignancies or other transplant indications. Exercise independent judgment in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of medical processes and procedures in accordance with credentialing and collaborative practice agreements. Evaluate patients and perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including bone marrow biopsies/aspirations, bone marrow harvesting, and lumbar punctures. Participate in implementation of clinic trials, and care for patients enrolled in trials and receiving study-approved therapies. Patient care responsibilities include working on weekends on assigned schedule and on-call time as determined by the needs of the program.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



Provision of Medical/ Psychiatric Care; Collaboration with Care Team

  • Perform overall medical care and medical management on the SCTCT inpatient unit and clinic under the direction of the attending physician, exercising independence in medical decision-making and services provided in the inpatient and outpatient setting under a collaborative practice agreement.
  • Perform and document initial evaluation of new and returning outpatients and admissions and subsequent care for inpatients and outpatients, including complete history and physical examination and, appropriate orders for treatment. This includes initial evaluations of patient symptoms. Provide specialized care independently or jointly with attending physician as appropriate.
  • Collaborate/consult in the optimization of care delivery through coordination and transitions of care as a part of a team.
  • Use judgment to provide continuity of care incorporating best practices and encouraging other to do the same.
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and treat medical conditions and record findings in the electronic medical record.
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests, imagining studies and other related studies.
  • Order diets, physical therapy, inhalation therapy, or other rehabilitative services.
  • Prescribe, order, and administer medications.
  • Discuss testing and treatment options and the associated risks, benefits and limitations with patients and families to assist them in making informed decisions.
  • Utilize technology to update personal knowledge regarding the current knowledge in the field. Maintain knowledge of accrediting bodies' expectations.
  • Coordinate or deliver services to patients requiring continuing care. Refer patients to appropriate clinicians as indicated.
  • Perform procedures on patients such as drawing blood, suture removal, bone marrow sampling and harvesting, administering intrathecal therapy - use of indwelling CNS catheters, diagnostic lumbar punctures, and removal of central lines as training and privileging allows.
  • Complete written medical record documentation, including clinic notes, inpatient patient progress notes and hospital discharge summary. Coordinate discharge planning process and appropriate post-discharge follow-up care.
  • Facilitate communication with internal and external health care providers, as directed by the attending physician. This includes obtaining relevant information from referring physicians and responding to patient calls.
  • Maintain awareness of health facilities, agencies, and resources in order to facilitate the appropriate referral of patients.
  • Direct other medical personnel and health professionals in the execution of patient care.
  • Complete medical record documentation and billing information in a timely manner, consistent with University of Iowa Physicians and Department policies. Submit charges for services rendered ensuring that medical record documentation supports those charges.

Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession and Education

  • Accurately and appropriately complete documentation of patient care in the EMR and other records for compliance, billing, and other regulatory standards.
  • Participate and/or lead in quality, safety, and process improvement activities.
  • Maintain compliance with FACT standards.

Education/ Health/ Promotion/ Research

  • Provide health education to patients and their families.
  • Enhance and support the clinical educational experience of trainees including medical students, residents, and other health professional learners. Mentor and educate fellows, residents, and ARNP/PA/medical students as to the needs and issues of outpatient and inpatient population management and optimal resource utilization.
  • Participate in the implementation of clinical trials in the SCTCT patient population in the patient and outpatient setting. Responsibilities include working directly with study principal investigators, clinical trial coordinators, and nursing staff to provide patient care; adhering to study protocols; and assessing and monitoring patients receiving investigation treatments or products.
  • Participate in ongoing research and professional development of self and other staff. Serve on committees to enhance patient care and operations.

Administration/ Human Resources Management

  • Assure effective communication/collaboration with all team members in the delivery of care.
  • Follow prescribed practices in communicating and elevating any quality and patient safety concerns. Coach and recognize team members whenever appropriate.
  • Participate in the UIHC APP Council and professional activities in the department, hospital, community, and professional organizations.


Education Requirements:


Physician Assistant (PA): Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP): A Master's degree is required. A Master's degree in Nursing is preferred. If a Master's degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing.

ARNP - Board certified and registered as an ARNP in state of Iowa.

ARNP - Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa


Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience working with the SCTCT patient required. Experience may include RN or APP experience in SCTCT.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience providing overall medical care and provide medical management for patients in an inpatient setting is desirable.
  • Experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided is desirable.
