Job Description:

The Department of World Languages and Literatures at Skidmore College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, specializing in Hispanophone Caribbean Studies, to begin in Fall 2025. We seek an innovative scholar whose interdisciplinary research and teaching engage with the diverse cultures, histories, and literatures of the Hispanophone Caribbean. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Spanish with expertise in Hispanophone Caribbean literature and culture, ideally in both the Caribbean region and the USA diaspora. We welcome those candidates with an interdisciplinary approach and are particularly interested in those whose work focuses on one or more of the following areas: 

  • Hispanophone Caribbean Literature and Culture; 
  • Diaspora and Migration Studies, exploring transnational identities, migration, and the global influence of Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Cuban communities;
  • Afro-Caribbean and Indigenous Studies, focusing on African heritage, indigenous legacies, and the intersections of race, religion, and identity in the Caribbean; 
  • Gender, Sexuality, and Queer Studies, addressing issues of gender, sexuality, and LGBTQ+ identities within Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Cuban contexts; 
  • Postcolonial and Decolonial Studies, examining the legacies of colonialism, U.S. imperialism, and anti-colonial movements in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba; 
  • Ecocriticism and Environmental Humanities, including climate change and its impact on the Caribbean islands, and the ecological legacies of colonialism and modernity

The candidates must have native or near-native fluency in Spanish and a good command of English. Preference will be given to candidates who can develop and teach courses at all levels of the Spanish language curriculum, from introductory courses in the language sequence to seminar and topic courses in the area of Caribbean Studies. Applicants must possess a strong desire to teach and pursue research in a liberal arts environment with a reputation for excellence in teaching.We encourage applications from historically under-represented groups as well as individuals who have experience in teaching in a multicultural classroom; women and minority candidates are encouraged to apply. Pay Rate: $75,000 - $85,000
Pay Ranges:The hiring rate for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:
  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic discipline (faculty pay ranges reflect 9-month annual salary).
