The University of Vermont (UVM) Libraries seek a director of Access, Technology, and Media Services (ATMS). We seek candidates with vision and verve; who are creative and collaborative; who will advocate for UVM's students and faculty and for library colleagues; and who will foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.
The director leads and supervises the dynamic work of the Access, Technology and Media Services Department. Work will include making existing services more visible and collaborating with colleagues to develop new research-support services. The director will help reimagine library service points as the library looks towards renovations of its physical spaces. Leading media services and technology services offers exciting opportunities to explore new technologies and facilitate research and education across campus.
Competitive candidates will have strong interpersonal skills, a commitment to teamwork, and demonstrated experience or knowledge of transformations necessary in academic libraries, especially technological developments, including AI. Candidates should have fluency in common library technology, including systems similar to those employed at UVM (e.g., Alma, digital-asset-management systems, EZproxy, ILLiad, etc.) Candidates should also think creatively about expanding access to scholarship through open access and other models for producing and disseminating information-a value central to the UVM's land-grant identity and commitment to the public good.
UVM recently migrated to new library service platforms and then moved into an Alma
network zone
this summer with four other members of the
Boston Library Consortium
. We'll ask the director to think creatively and ambitiously about cooperative efforts to improve access to materials through the network zone.
We seek both a leader and a collaborator-someone who can help craft a vision for the department and work with colleagues to implement that vision.This position provides leadership, planning, coordination, direction, and supervision for the


Department's services and its team of 20 faculty and staff. This director has five direct reports: the access services supervisor, the interlibrary loan supervisor, the digital scholarship and technology librarian, the systems and technology services librarian, and the web services librarian.
This position reports to the Dean of Libraries and works closely with other library directors and colleagues across UVM's three library buildings: Howe Library, Dana Health Sciences Library, and Silver Special Collections Library. This position provides leadership in the Libraries' planning and operations as a member of the Dean's Council and ensures close cooperation with other library departments. Librarians at the University of Vermont hold faculty appointments without tenure. As such, librarians are expected to perform in three areas: Educational Mission (Librarianship); Scholarly and Creative Activity; and Service. Rank at time of initial hire and promotions are based upon performance in all three areas.

Responsibilities:


  • Leads the ATMS Department, including four subdepartments: access services, technology and systems, media services and interlibrary loan (20 employees total). Provides a cohesive, forward-thinking vision for these departments and promotes collaboration across the library both within this department and with other colleagues and campus partners.

  • Supervises the access services supervisor, the interlibrary loan supervisor, the digital scholarship and technology librarian, the systems and technology services librarian, and the web services librarian.

  • Provides leadership in the Libraries' strategic planning and operations as a member of the Dean's Council.

  • Trains, mentors, and facilitates continuing education and professional development opportunities for colleagues in the Access, Technology and Multimedia Services department.

  • Works closely with the University of Vermont's Enterprise Technology Services Department to collaborate on library and university technology issues and serve as a communicator and advocate between these departments.

  • Works closely with the directors of Information & Instructional Services (I&IS) and the Dana Health Sciences Library to provide high-quality access and information services to students, faculty and other library users

  • Represents the UVM Libraries in the Boston Library Consortium's Network Zone .

  • Cultivates a personal research agenda and engages in service.





Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree (M.L.S., M.S., or M.A. in Library or Information Science, or other variation) from a program accredited by the American Library Association or the equivalent professional credential in librarianship. Those who have a Master's degree or PhD in another field and have completed a formal program providing training as a librarian, combined with at least one year of experience in a professional role as an academic librarian, may also be eligible.

  • Demonstrated management, leadership, and supervisory experience with increasing levels of responsibility over time.

  • Demonstrated experience building and managing collaborative and collegial relationships and encouraging cross-organizational communication.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in technology.

  • Working knowledge of circulation operations, interlibrary loan services, media services, or library technology and systems, with demonstrated experience in at least one of the four.

  • Excellent oral, written, listening, and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility; awareness and understanding of diverse thought, cultures, race, religion, gender, and other differences.

  • A strong record of scholarship and professional achievement that warrants appointment at the rank of Library Associate or Full Professor.

Appointment, Salary, Benefits:The Director has a primary appointment as an academic administrator and a secondary appointment as a Library Faculty member. Library Directors have a record of librarianship, scholarship, and service appropriate for an appointment at the rank of Library Associate Professor or above. The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $130,000. Library Faculty are not eligible for tenure.
