Overview:Under the direction of Quinnipiac University's Chief of Public Safety, we invite applications for the position of Armed Public Safety Officer. Newly hired officers will be assigned to either the evening shift or the overnight shift, based on the needs of the department at time of hiring. The hourly rate of pay is $25.00. Evening and overnight shifts include shift differential pay.
Military veterans who served in the Army or Marine Corps and held a military police occupational specialty are eligible and encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:



Patrol duties:



  • Armed first responder to all emergencies on campus to protect life and property.

  • Responds to calls for service. Conducts preliminary investigation and writes thorough and detailed incident reports. Contacts local law enforcement as necessary.

  • Responds with local law enforcement, fire and EMS to all emergencies occurring off campus at Quinnipiac owned properties.

  • Conducts preventive patrols and makes routine security checks of all off campus buildings and structures.

  • Detects and investigates criminal activity on university property.

  • May detain persons who have committed offenses and turn custody over to local law enforcement.

  • Conducts parking enforcement, issues citations, and tows vehicles as necessary.



Campus security services:



  • Conducts security patrols of all Quinnipiac properties 24/7, year-round. Patrols are made primarily by vehicle. Walking and bicycle patrols are also performed.

  • Answers all alarm calls. Sets/resets alarms. Manages building access control.

  • Makes reports of unsafe building and grounds maintenance issues to Facilities Department.

  • Serves as emergency notifying agency for facilities related issues after business hours.

  • Assists community members, guests and visitors needing help or support.

  • Provides security and crowd management services at special events such as athletic events, move-in, and graduations.

  • Provides escorts and dignitary protection.

  • Performs other duties as directed by Chief of Public Safety or designee.



Residential Life/Student Affairs:



  • Responds to all reported disturbances, emergencies, and suspicious circumstances in the residence halls.

  • Assist Residential Hall Directors with uncooperative or confrontational residents and unregistered guests.

  • Assist Residential Life staff with enforcement of housing policies.

  • Perform room and/or vehicle searches as authorized by university policy.



Specialized Assignments:



  • Bike Patrol

  • Field Training Officer


Qualifications:



Mandatory Qualifications:



  • The Armed Public Safety Officer shall be a retired member of an organized local, state, or federal government agency as a law enforcement officer.

  • Served as a local, state or federal law enforcement officer for an aggregate of 2 years or more and separated from such service in good standing.

  • Current State of Connecticut Pistol Permit.

  • Ability to obtain Connecticut State Police Approved Armed Security Guard Firearms Permit (Blue Card).

  • Basic computer skills required.

  • Candidate must pass extensive background investigation including check for criminal history and psychological exam.

  • Candidate must pass physical exam and drug test.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills required.

  • Excellent interpersonal and human relation skills required.

  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment and common sense appropriate to the related circumstances.

  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions and prepare accurate and clear information for comprehensive report preparation.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of job-related information.

  • Ability and willingness to work rotating shifts covering all days of the week and all hours of the day including weekends and holidays.



Mandatory Documentation Requirements:



  • A letter or certificate stating that you are a graduate of an approved local, state, or federal law enforcement training academy.

  • A letter of recommendation from your previous Police Chief indicating that you served as a local, state or federal law enforcement officer for an aggregate of 2 years or more and separated from such service in good standing.

  • Current State of Connecticut Pistol Permit.

  • Valid Connecticut driver's license.

  • DMV driving record history.



Physical Requirements:



  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have full range of mobility in upper and lower body and be able to reach overhead. Be able to work in various positions, including but not limited to, stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling, and squatting for extended periods of time. Be able to lift, pull and push materials and equipment to complete the assigned job task. Be able to lift and/or move 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up top 50 pounds.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time for a period of time.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as the ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. This position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

Reasoning Skills:



  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.



Computer Skills:



  • Computer knowledge within area of responsibility. Frequent use equipment utilized by The University Department of Public Safety, Desktop and Lap Top Computers and multi-line telephone.

  • The hourly rate of pay is $25.00 per hour.


  • Overtime opportunities are available.


  • The hiring process for this position will consist of in-person oral board interview, reference checks, Chief's interview, full background check, drug test, physical demands evaluation (fitness for duty), physical pre-screening requirements, and a psychological exam.
