Job Summary: The assistant superintendent is a critical part of project oversight. As a member of the project staff, assistant superintendents are responsible for overseeing field construction in specified areas or trades. They are expected to implement and enforce all relevant safety and Quality Control policies and procedures with support from a superintendent or senior superintendent while working with the project management staff to accomplish the project goals.
Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities:
Schedule
Oversee and manage work to ensure it is executed in line with contract documents, project timelines, and the planned sequence of activities. Stay informed about project milestone dates and the necessary steps to meet them
Utilize your understanding of equipment and crew capabilities to create plans/schedules to communicate and coordinate your area of responsibility
Gain insight into the time required for each activity
Notify the Project Superintendent if it is found that a subcontractor is not supplying sufficient resources (supervision / equipment / manpower) to fulfill the project expectations or requirements
Be aware of the scheduled delivery dates for all materials and equipment that directly impact the assigned area(s) or trade(s)
Possess a comprehensive understanding of the contract documents and the scope of work for the designated area(s) or trade(s).
Cost Control and Supervision:
Budget Awareness: Be knowledgeable about the budgets for the work being supervised.
Productivity Expectations: Have a clear understanding of reasonable productivity expectations for subcontractors and use this knowledge to assess the efficiency of the field workforce.
Problem-Solving: Utilize experience and intuition to identify causes and develop solutions when costs exceed the budget, estimate, or reasonable expectations
Safety Implementation:
Enforce the company and jobsite safety program. Be thoroughly familiar with all company safety standards, manuals, and procedures.
Engage in daily stretch, flex, and safety toolbox talks with crew.
Conduct regular, both scheduled and unscheduled, safety inspections to ensure all working conditions and practices comply with company and government standards. Take corrective action when necessary.
Hazard Recognition: Establish a procedure for hazard recognition at the start of every new activity, and a plan to mitigate
Have a working knowledge of applicable government regulations (e.g., OSHA) for the project.
Foster positive working relationships with subcontractors, Global’s customers, General Contractors, Engineers, Suppliers, and Government Officials. Handle disagreements professionally and amicably. Be able to disagree without being disagreeable.
Trains employees to complete projects within established guidelines and timeframes.
Interacts with departments within Global to keep business moving efficiently: Safety, Project Managers, Accounting, Human Resources, Shop, and others.
Work and communicate calmly under pressure and high-stress situations to achieve solutions.
Qualifications:
Ability to accurately read plans and specifications to perform and verify a quality work review.
Ability to understand job constraints and budgets as projects are executed to profitably close the job.
Ability to work independently with little instructions.
Self-motivated with strong time management skills to ensure employees and job requirements are both satisfied.
Capable of remaining organized while multi-tasking.
Phone skills (calls, reading and responding to emails and texts).
Able to travel within local areas.
Must be dependable and willing to report to work on time.
Ability to work extended hours during the construction season.
Must be able to pass a drug test and background check.
Physical Requirements and Working Environment:
Ability to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, walk, stand; Able to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 lbs. and lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
