Assistant Professor

Department of Psychology

The Psychology Department, in the College of Liberal Arts, at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin September 1, 2025. Applications received by October 7th will be assured full review.

Requirements: Successful candidates will have a PhD in Psychology/Neuroscience, Statistics/Data Science, or related field. This position will be affiliated with the Developmental & Brain Sciences (DBS) PhD program, the only Neuroscience program at a public university in the Boston area. Candidates should have a research program that overlaps with faculty in DBS and graduate mentees, but also sufficiently general analytical skills to provide consulting to faculty and students in both DBS and our APA-accredited Clinical Psychology PhD program. The ideal candidate will have a track record of excellence in 1) collaborative research, utilizing modern analytical techniques relevant to Psychology; 2) teaching, with classroom experience relevant to our undergraduate courses in statistics and research methods, our first-year graduate course in statistics for students in both the DBS and Clinical Psychology doctoral programs, as well as advanced courses on analytical techniques (e.g. robust, GLMM, SEM, and Bayesian methods - using R); and 3) student mentorship, including a commitment to support collaboration with graduate and undergraduate students from underrepresented groups. Preference will be given to a candidate committed to open science practices and whose perspective would support the social justice work of our Department.

Background: Our department serves a large undergraduate major, offering both a BA and BS in Psychology as well as two PhD programs (Developmental & Brain Science and Clinical Psychology). Most faculty conducting lab-based research have space in the Integrated Sciences Building, part of our campus on the Columbia Point peninsula, offering wonderful views of the city and Boston Harbor.

Application instructions: Electronic submission is required at https://hr.umb.edu/jobs. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, and research and teaching statements. Please also include contact information for three references whom we may contact for letters of recommendation. Please direct questions to Dr. Erik Blaser (erik.blaser@umb.edu) Chair of the Search Committee.

UMass Boston is the third most diverse university in the country, with more than 60% of our undergraduate students coming from minoritized communities and groups and more than half of our students are the first in their families to attend a college or university. Thus, our students come to us from richly diverse life experiences and backgrounds; they bring to our classrooms and research settings the robust range of perspectives growing out of the socio-cultural, economic, and historical contexts in which they have lived, along with the challenges they encounter, engage, and strive to overcome.

Given this context, please articulate how your approach to teaching, advising, and mentoring:

  • will engage with the diverse life experiences of students,

  • will reflect an appreciation for the ways in which students bring their holistic selves into the academic setting, and

  • will reflect how your own life experiences and background shapes your practices and commitments as an instructor, mentor, researcher, and scholar.

UMass Boston is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals. As part of this commitment, we will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodations for the hiring process. If reasonable accommodation is needed, please contact HRDirect@umb.edu or 617-287-5150.
