Purpose of Position


The University of North Dakota's (UNDs) Department of Atmospheric Sciences is seeking qualified applicants with an existing nationally/internationally recognized research portfolio to apply for an open rank faculty position (at Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level). The position may be tenured or tenure track (see below for details). The anticipated start date is 16 August 2025.




The Department of Atmospheric Sciences is part of the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences at UND and offers degree programs leading to the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences. UND is a UCAR Member institution. Spring 2024 enrollments included 128 undergraduate students (70 minors and 58 majors), and 31 graduate students in these programs. Teaching and research is carried out by 12 faculty members; current areas of faculty expertise are listed at http://atmos.und.edu/Research/. Facilities include a 5-cm wavelength dual polarization Doppler weather radar, two instrumented ground research sites, and use of a Cessna Citation research aircraft in collaboration with a local research firm. Cooperative programs are ongoing with the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office in Grand Forks. Additional information can be found on our web site: http://atmos.und.edu.



Tenure

This open rank position may be tenure track, with possible years of credit toward tenure based on the candidate's documented record of achievement, subject to approval from the Department, College, University and the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education. Alternatively, the position may come with tenure if the successful applicant has already attained tenure at another Institution in a similar field, subject to approval from the Department, College, University and the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • The successful candidates will be responsible for:

    • Teaching up to 3 courses per year (2+1 or 1+2 schedule) with fewer courses possible in association with administrative duties or a heavier research load with course buyouts.

    • Continuing nationally/internationally-recognized externally-funded independent research.

    • Providing service to the department, college, university, and national/international community, including academic advising.




Required Competencies

  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff and students.

  • Appreciation for or experience with diverse constituencies.

  • Research that aligns with UND Grand Challenge goals (such as autonomous systems, energy sustainability, or big data).


Minimum Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, or a closely-related field.

  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Is a professor of any rank (Assistant, Associate, or Full) or a post-doctoral fellow at a College/University or is an atmospheric scientist at a national laboratory.

  • Evidence of the ability to successfully obtain consistent external research funding.

  • Subject matter expertise in aviation meteorology, boundary-layer meteorology, climate dynamics and modeling, cloud physics and atmospheric chemistry, energy sustainability and renewable energy, mesoscale meteorology and severe storms, stratospheric research, social science, and/or atmospheric science applications involving machine learning or artificial intelligence. This expertise should be demonstrated through prior teaching assignments and/or published peer-reviewed journal articles and books.

  • Leadership experience.

  • Project management tasks as principle investigator or co-investigator of a research project (including planning, analysis, reporting, training, and administration).
