What You Will Do:



The Azenta Automation Engineering team is responsible for developing automated hardware and software to transform our sample repository (SRS) and multiomics (Genewiz) businesses. We work with the latest technologies to push the boundaries of what is possible within these spaces to ensure Azenta's industry leading position.


The Senior Systems Engineer is a critical member of the team and drives hardware product design and development. This role is expected to significantly lead and contribute to hardware design including complex electromechanical mechanisms & drive systems. They are involved in all phases of development from initial concept to manufacturing & field support. They will function as a project engineer/leader at times, with the responsibilities of proposals/project plan, schedules, work assignments, prime contact, technical presentations, cross functional issue resolution, etc.


The role is individual contributor level with opportunities to mentor junior engineers. There is the possibility of growth into a management position of a small team of engineers (3-5).


  • Lead cradle-to-grave design of automated hardware systems, with a focus on electro- mechanical mechanism design

  • System architecture design, component selection, schematic design, etc.

  • Ensure adherence to Azenta product development process including requirements & specification generation, and test protocol creation to ensure product meets compliance & design requirements



  • Key contributor to:

    • Design Verification Testing (DVT) efforts (including extended reliability tests), create test protocols, procedures, and final reports.

    • Risk Analysis activities, Design Failure Modes Effects Analysis (DFMEA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Risk Management Reporting, etc.

    • Creation of requirements traceability documentation demonstrating design inputs are adequately traced to appropriate outputs and tests.



  • Develop required documentation during the development and transfer to production (models, detail drawings, diagrams, BOM, assembly procedures, etc.)

  • Engage in hands-on assembly, troubleshooting, debug, and qualification of subsystems and components as part of the development process



  • Project management ensuring adherence to project schedule and budget, sometimes while managing additional resources

  • Supplier communication to support new product design and sustaining efforts



  • Lead and contribute to design reviews


What You Will Bring:



  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mechanical, Robotics, Electrical Engineering or related discipline

  • 7+ years of design experience with products or equipment with significant robotics, electromechanical mechanisms, or automation.

  • Completed a minimum of 2 product life cycles (from concept to production) as a key contributor.

  • Functional user of SolidWorks MCAD or equivalent 3D MCAD program

  • Working knowledge of DFM principles with a focus on machining and fabrication processes applicable to low volume manufacturing (machining, bending, vacuum forming, additive manufacturing, etc)

  • Systems level understanding of low-voltage AC/DC circuits, component selection (e.g. sensors, actuators, data acquisition), and circuit diagrams

  • Practical understanding of fluid flow, thermal, and structural design considerations

  • Demonstrated capability to perform engineering analysis and familiarity with commonly used analysis tools (e.g., mechanical and thermal FEA & CFD)

  • Collaborative team player; able to give and receive feedback

  • Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented while being flexible, open, and able to adapt to changing priorities A self-starter; must be able to work independently with minimum supervision or direction


Bonus Experience



  • Design of hardware for use in ultra-low temperature environments (-80C)

  • Expertise or familiarity with industrial robots, vision systems, end-effectors, etc

  • Familiarity with software programming (C#, C++, Java, Python, .NET, etc.)

  • Familiarity with CAN bus and its protocols

  • Good understanding of motion controllers

  • Statistics and reliability analysis

  • ISO 13485 and FDA/cGMP experience




Working Conditions



  • Occasional travel (< 15%) is expected depending on the project phase

  • Hybrid work (3 days / week onsite in Billerica, MA)
