High school diploma or equivalent, three years of experience in the operation of a variety of heavy equipment in construction and maintenance work, one of which involved concrete work, possession of a valid commercial driver’s license with Class B endorsement and maintenance of a driving record sufficient to maintain insurance coverage under the University of South Alabama. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Job Description Summary
The University of South Alabama’s Grounds department is seeking to hire a Heavy Equipment Operator II. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.
Essential Functions These are the job duties required of the position.
Essential Functions
Safely operates solid waste collection truck throughout campus areas and off campus if required.
Safely operates other vehicles and motorized equipment as required in the performance of assigned duties.
Loads bagged trash and solid waste from assigned pick-up points into truck and unloads at designated transfer station.
Collects waste from outside containers.
Performs preventive maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment, to include checking level of and adding fuel, water, grease, oil and air, checking brakes and brake fluid level, changing tires, cleaning interior and washing exterior.
Safely operates a loader, backhoe, bull dozer, lull lift, skid steer, and excavator in digging ditches, building berms and swales.
Loads sand, soil, gravel, and rock on trucks.
Performs manual labor incidental to the operation to which assigned.
May be required to operate a chain saw in association with tree felling and brush clearance.
Operates a dump truck up to 24 cubic yards.
Operates hydraulic tree spade and high speed chipper/grinder.
Uses transit to shoot grades for drainage and construction projects.
Assists with various grounds construction projects such as concrete work, retaining walls and drainage projects.
Assists other departments with trenching, excavation, rock work and dirt work as needed.
May be required to operate mowers of various types.
Assists with Ground’s maintenance when needed.
Travels to various work sites using a University vehicle.
Moves equipment and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance.
Regular and prompt attendance.
Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required.
Related duties as required.
