Summary

Reports to the Health/Wellness Director. Performs specialized dental functions in the provision of dental services to students.

Essential Functions

  • Prepares individual student medical folders. Observes discretion in handling confidential information.

  • Prepares medical appointment slips for students in the Center Information System (CIS).

  • Maintains student records for a variety of purposes, such as status reports.

  • Responds to student and staff inquiries regarding medical records.

  • Performs other general clerical duties including, but not limited to, typing correspondence, form letters, schedules, forms, and reports.

  • Proofreads and copies documents, processes incoming and outgoing mail, answers telephone, receives visitors, and files documentation.

  • Assists with processing students’ medical leaves in the CIS.

  • Assists with maintaining medical equipment and inventory.

  • Prepares all incoming medical bills for manager review prior to submission to the finance department.

  • Prepares a treatment room for patients by adhering to prescribed procedures and protocols.

  • Prepares patients for dental hygiene treatment by welcoming, soothing, seating, and draping patients.

  • Provides information to patients and employees by answering questions and requests.

  • Maintains instrumentation for dental hygiene treatment by sharpening, sterilizing, and selecting proper instruments for the procedure.

  • Selects materials and equipment for dental hygiene visit by evaluating patient’s oral health.

  • Helps dentists manage dental and medical emergencies by maintaining CPR certification, emergency drugs and oxygen supply, and directory of emergency numbers.

  • Educates patients by giving oral hygiene and plaque control instructions and postoperative instructions and providing reminders of time of next dental hygiene visit.

  • Documents dental hygiene services by recording vital signs and medical and dental histories and charting in patient records.

  • Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential in accordance with HIPAA.

  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.

  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.

  • Ensures operation of dental equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, submitting work orders, when necessary, through Asset Essentials, maintaining equipment inventories, and evaluating new equipment and techniques.

  • Maintains dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies, placing, and expediting orders for supplies, and verifying receipt of supplies.

  • Conserves dental resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.

  • Models, mentors, and monitors the positive normative culture of the center.

  • Acts as a responsible custodian for the assigned center property.

  • Reports violations of ethical behavior.

  • Suggests opportunities for continuous operational improvement and reduction of waste.

  • Identifies and reports environmental health and safety concerns.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Education & Experience

  • State-registered Dental Hygienist

  • Must meet education and examination requirements as established by the state’s Dental Practice Act for dental hygienists.

  • Have satisfactorily practiced for at least two years for licensure by endorsement. • Experience with EMR (electronic medical records), medical terminology.

  • Must complete state required continuing education hours in accordance with state licensing and Dental Practice Act (which may include infection control, child abuse identification and reporting, confidentiality).

  • One year’s experience working with young adults or adolescents.

Certifications/Competencies

  • Certification from accredited Dental Hygiene School and licensure must be in good standing in state where dental hygiene is provided.

  • Must be knowledgeable of medical software and computer networking systems. • Ability to promote the Career Success Standards (CSS) by modeling appropriate behaviors, mentoring students when necessary, and monitoring both positive and negative behaviors through interventions

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Computer proficiency

  • Must type a minimum of 50 words per minute.

Minimum Eligibility Qualifications

  • If the position requires driving, a valid driver's license in the state of employment with an acceptable driving record is required

  • I-9 documentation required to verify authorization to work in the United States

  • Successfully pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check and drug test.
