Overview

We are seeking a dynamic individual to join our Pediatric Neuromuscular Medicine Program at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and OHSU. The Pediatric Neurology Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will join a team of medical providers and supporting staff who provide collaborative and multidisciplinary care to children with neuromuscular conditions through the Doernbecher Pediatric Neuromuscular Clinic within the Division of Pediatric Neurology.

The APP faculty will have numerous opportunities to become involved in quality improvement work, education, research, and childhood advocacy. Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, the Department of Pediatrics, and the Division of Pediatric Neurology are committed to developing our faculty members’ careers. A pathway for academic appointment and promotion for APPs was recently implemented at OHSU.

Professional attendance and participation are expected at relevant educational conferences and didactic conferences. As teaching is an important component of the OHSU and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital mission, there will be ample opportunity to engage in teaching of students, trainees and staff.

Function/Duties of Position

The Advanced Practice Provider is a faculty member credentialed and privileged to serve as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.

The position involves a mix of clinical responsibilities that include seeing patients in ambulatory clinics (5-6 sessions/week), sharing coverage with the other pediatric neuromuscular program faculty.

This role is in alignment with the OHSU Dept of Pediatrics Mission of clinical, advocacy, research, and educational excellence

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical plans of care or guidelines for patients with common pediatric neuromuscular conditions, diagnoses, and/or procedures
  • Assure the safe, efficient, high quality and customer-oriented management of children including but not limited to completing a comprehensive assessment of the patient's status
  • Developing, monitoring and revising evidence-based treatment plans that addresses diagnoses, patterns of disease, risk factors, and treatment alternatives
  • Interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe and manage medications and other therapies
  • Management and treatment of common acute and chronic health diagnoses in children
  • Provide health teaching with an emphasis on prevention of illness and health maintenance
  • Refer patients to other healthcare professionals as necessary

Education/Advocacy:

  • Provides clinical education to fellows, residents, medical and APP students participating in pediatric rotations.
  • Provide feedback and evaluation, both formally and informally, of learners and trainees
  • Specifically, APP faculty are key educators to house staff in the Pediatric Neurology Residency Program with the expectation to provide feedback and guidance in the continuing development and improvement of the program.
  • Education and evaluation of OHSU nursing students who rotate through outpatient clinics.

Scholarship/Research:

  • APP faculty are expected to have some scholarly activity. This may include research, grant supported work, quality improvement projects, academic papers and/or presentations in disciplines related to their field of expertise.
  • APP faculty members are often called upon to partner with other providers and members of the department or division research support staff in research activity. Roles include co-investigator and sub-investigator on protocols. Independent APP investigator-initiated projects are also encouraged and supported.
  • Membership in local and national groups related to child neurology and epilepsy is encouraged, and attendance at national meetings is supported, particularly if faculty have participated in research or other work that will be presented.

Administrative Activities:

  • Participation in faculty meetings at the division, department, APP, and organizational level.
  • Attending relevant conferences/committees as assigned by Division head or Pediatric APP Director
  • Academic and professional development through attendance and/or participation at national/regional conferences is strongly encouraged.


Responsibilities

  • Master’s Degree or higher as required by specific Advanced Practice Provider role:
    • Physician Assistant requirements
      • Current & Active Physician Assistant license for State of Oregon
      • Current Physician Assistant National Board Certification
    • Nurse Practitioner requirements
      • Pediatric or Family Nurse Practitioner license for the state of Oregon
      • State of Oregon Nurse Practitioner Prescriptive Privileges
      • National Board Certification
  • Current active DEA license
  • Ability to manage a heavy workload with multiple priorities and inflexible deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Proficient in the use of computing hardware and software, including personal computing equipment, electronic medical record, word processing, and spreadsheet software
  • Regular and consistent attendance at work
