Overview

We are currently seeking a Laboratory Technician to serve the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Clinical Research Unit (CRU) Laboratory in their mission to aid NIEHS-supported scientists in translational research by providing them with high-quality human biospecimens. The Laboratory Technician will serve on a multi-disciplinary team of dedicated research professionals that supports research studies for the NIEHS. This position is located onsite in Research Triangle Park, NC.

The CRU conducts a diverse array of research studies, such as exploring pulmonary diseases, medical genetics and reproductive health, as well as investigator-initiated FDA studies. As a Laboratory Technician, you will play a vital role in study design and conduct of research studies from inception to conclusion.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Process, examine, and analyze human biospecimens.
  • Isolate cells for clinical research studies.
  • Prepare and isolate biomolecules for further testing by principal investigators.
  • Support specimen inventory management through a laboratory inventory management system.
  • Characterize cells via live cell images, immunocytochemistry, and flow cytometry.
  • Perform pilot research studies.
  • Receive and ship samples.
  • Maintain files on servers and databases.
  • Track files on all samples and data.
  • Provide quality assurance of labeling of samples.
  • Maintain inventory, order in-house laboratory supplies and reagents.
  • Be responsible for the submission and proper disposal of laboratory generated chemical waste.
  • Ensure that equipment used is in working order, properly maintained, and calibrated.
  • Maintain safe working environment when conducting research and laboratory procedures.

Additional Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in a scientific field such as biology, chemistry, clinical laboratory, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of three years working in a laboratory setting that fosters the skills below (preferred).
  • Proficient in lab techniques, software, experimental procedures, equipment operation, and work with clinical research samples (preferred).
  • Proficient in using PC systems and MS Office Suite.
  • Must be able to comply with NIH/NIEHS/CRU immunization requirements.

  • Teamwork and Interpersonal Skills: Working effectively with other lab members, clinical staff, and multi-functional teams.
  • Problem-Solving: The capacity to troubleshoot and address unexpected issues that may arise during experiments.
  • Analytical Skills: The ability to analyze and interpret experimental data accurately.
  • Ethical Standards: Adherence to ethical standards such as GCP (Good Clinical Practice).
  • Adaptability: Flexibility and adaptability to evolving research objectives, methodologies, and techniques.
