Purpose and Scope of Job:
Weld/Fabricate complete, tight tolerance welded steel assemblies up to 75 kg using plate thicknesses from sheet metal and tack-weld large weldments (up to 1000kg).
Complete all weldments with prescribed levels of quality, in a timely manner, and with proper documentation.
Essential Functions (other duties may be assigned):
Read and interpret complex engineering drawings and blueprints (both Imperial and Metric Standards) for manufacturing welded and fabricated components and assemblies. Interpret engineering tolerances (GD&T) and ALL welding symbology called out on drawings.Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and part drawings/standards.Read and follow any available process sheets or setup documentation for the parts.Follow best order of welding the assemblies based on shape, size, and complexity of part.Determine equipment, tools, jigs, fixturing and measurement devices required for the job.Use CNC cutting equipment (plasma/laser/water jet) and/or non CNC cutting equipment (Band saw/Handheld plasma) to cut stock (plate, flat bar, tubing, angle) to size and to generate complex burnouts.Use grinder, bead blaster, and other appropriate tools and equipment to clean, finish, and fit subcomponents tin preparation for welding.Lay out position of part and align parts in relation to each other. Use appropriate fixturing to fit components per drawing and hold them in place. Use measuring gauges including micrometers, calipers, height gauge, measuring tape, framing square, straight edge, laser level, etc. in order to ensure adherence to drawing tolerances. Locate and mark reference points, frame lines, etc. as needed.Mark locations of holes to be machined and install temporary fasteners to hold in place for tack welding.Ensure that part is correctly fixtured and tack weld assembly prior to finish (fill) welding.Complete welding joints on Torque arms and Brackets as called out in part/fabrication drawing using MIG/TIG welding equipment as applicable, while ensuring quality of fill weldments are to SMAs prescribed weld standards.Inspect own work and correct welds as necessary to meet product specifications. After part is finish machined, conduct air leak test.Ensure adherence to both routed hours and target efficiencies for production.Provide feedback on equipment, tooling, jigs, fixtures, and work holding solutions to reduce setup times and eliminate rework. Recommend modifications for improved efficiency in assigned areas.Maintains cleanliness of the work area and ensures proper handling of tools, equipment, and stock to prevent loss.Inspect equipment to ascertain if any equipment needs repairs, and if any repairs or maintenance is needed, notify supervisor or maintenance department.Work closely with shop management, quality assurance, and maintenance personnel to proactively prevent problems with machining cells and tooling/fixtures, and to identify ways to improve efficiency, cost, layout, and safety.Utilize in house discrepancy reporting system to record discrepancies and issues with fabrication, and assist in resolution as required.Operate manufacturing computer system in relation to shop orders.Operate material handling equipment (Fork Truck, Overhead Crane, etc.) for movement of parts during fabrication and delivery of finished parts.Ensure all manufacturing safety & regulatory policies and procedures are implemented and maintained at all times.Actively maintain a culture of 5S (Sort, Set and Order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain) in the machine shop.Train and Mentor other Welders (Apprentice and Welder I)Non-Essential Functions (performed on an infrequent basis): Be an active resource in time studies to analyze processes & to validate recommended process changes.Be a resource to company projects. Work on cross functional Lean/Continuous Improvement Teams (including brainstorming sessions and kaizen events) to improve manufacturing process efficiency, costs, quality, and delivery performance.Use systematic Problem Solving methods as required to ensure efficient production methods and quality results.
