Position Opportunity


The Ohio State University Infectious Diseases Institute, a premiere interdisciplinary infectious diseases research institute within the Enterprise for Research, Innovation, and Knowledge, is seeking a motivated, proactive, and skilled individual to work in the IDI Genomics and Microbiology Solutions Lab (IDI-GEMS) as laboratory research operations specialist (IDI-GEMS lab specialist). IDI-GEMS is a university earnings operation and functions as a research incubator for the infectious diseases research community. IDI-GEMS includes five service areas: The Bacillus Genetic Stock Center; tickborne pathogen testing, dust pathogen testing; genomic sequencing, and bioinformatics. The IDIGEMS lab specialist will have a primary focus in the tick-borne pathogen testing service and a secondary focus in the Bacillus Genetic Stock Center. The IDI-GEMS lab specialist will also serve in other lab areas, as needed, to ensure staff optimization/organizational efficiency and for professional development.





Position Description


Under the direction of the IDI-GEMS director and the IDI-GEMS tick-borne pathogen testing lead, the laboratory research operations specialist (IDI lab specialist) will utilize research lab skills to perform tick identification, tick DNA extractions, and tick-borne pathogen diagnostic tests based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tick-borne pathogen testing guidelines. The IDI-GEMS lab specialist will gain expertise in use of the IDI-GEMS laboratory information management system (LIMS) for intake of tick sample orders and progression of pathogen testing through the resulting and reporting stage. The IDI-GEMS lab specialist will assist with maintaining content on the Buckeye Tick Test website and collaborate with appropriate parties on LIMS and website issues. The IDI-GEMS lab specialist will be responsible for duties related to the Bacillus Genetic Stock Center, such as order processing, strain preparation, and client communications. Other duties of the IDI-GEMS lab specialist include, establishing test plans, generating quotes, interacting with the IDI-GEMS tick-borne pathogen faculty lead ordering supplies and maintaining inventory, and participating in meetings. IDI-GEMS lab specialist will cross train in other IDI-GEMS lab service areas including, dust pathogen testing services and genomic sequencing services.





Required Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in entomology or biological sciences field (e.g., genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, chemistry) or equivalent experience; well-developed communication skills and interpersonal skills; ability to work in biosafety level 1 and 2 lab and ability to stand for long periods of time; ability to prioritize work and accommodate shifting priorities and change; experience with general lab equipment; ability to work with a diverse group of team members to complete tasks, as well as ability to work independently; ability to stand for long periods of time; ability to maintain confidential information.





Desired Qualifications


Up to 2 years of relevant work experience; knowledge of tick species, tick-borne pathogens, and tickborne diseases.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, non-exempt, term* position and work must be performed on-site in labs with both BSL1 and BSL2 designations (note: there are two lab locations, and the IDI-GEMS lab specialist will be required to spend time in both). This position is eligible for overtime and differential pay, with prior approval from IDI-GEMS director; position may require non-traditional work hours, including evenings and/or weekends and/or holidays, and hours may exceed 40 hours per week based on work volume. The hourly wage for this position will be based on a number of factors, including the final candidate's experience, education, department budget, and equity.


*Term = 3 years max with the possibility of conversion to a regular/permanent position based on performance and unit budget.
