Job Description:

Meharry Medical College (MMC) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Data & AI Governance Specialist to support the development and implementation of a comprehensive Data AI framework, ensuring that all AI/ML initiatives adhere to principles of fairness, transparency, and equity. The specialist will be key in ensuring responsible data stewardship, privacy, and security across the AI and data lifecycle, focusing on advancing health equity for underserved populations. Working under the Clinical Data Stewardship department of the Enterprise Data and Analytics (EDA) division, this position will support the implementation and management of data and AI governance at MMC. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge AI/ML projects that will shape the future of healthcare at Meharry Medical College, with a specific focus on reducing health disparities.



Daily Operations



Data Governance Implementation


  • Develop and implement data governance protocols, including data privacy, security, and ethical use of data, to support AI/ML projects.

  • Ensure compliance with institutional, federal, and international data regulations such as HIPAA, GDPR, and other relevant standards.

  • Design and maintain processes for data collection, handling, storage, and sharing in line with the institution's AI ethics and equity guidelines.

  • Coordinate with institutional departments and external partners to integrate governance practices across systems.

AI Ethics & Fairness


  • Ensure AI/ML models and tools adhere to principles of fairness, equity, and transparency, mitigating bias and ensuring diverse representation in datasets and AI outputs.

  • Develop guidelines for responsible data stewardship throughout the AI lifecycle, from data collection to model development and deployment.

  • Conduct regular equity audits of AI/ML tools to assess their impact on health disparities.

Stakeholder Engagement


  • Engage with community representatives, particularly from underserved populations, to ensure their perspectives are reflected in the development and use of AI/ML tools.

  • Collaborate with clinical, technical, and research teams to identify and address governance challenges, providing solutions that align with the project's goals of advancing health equity.

Training & Awareness


  • Lead training initiatives to raise awareness of data governance and AI ethics best practices among staff, students, and researchers.

  • Develop educational materials and resources to promote understanding of data governance and AI ethics across the institution.




Required Skills



  • Proven ability to design and implement data governance frameworks and protocols.

  • Familiarity with AI/ML technologies, including model development, data handling, and fairness assessment.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, including community representatives, clinicians, and data scientists.

  • Ability to conduct training and develop educational resources related to data governance and AI ethics.

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.




Required Education and Experience



  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field. A Master's degree is preferred.

  • At least 2 years of experience in data governance, data stewardship, or AI/ML project management area.

  • Experience with data privacy and security frameworks such as HIPAA, GDPR, and similar regulatory standards.

  • Experience or strong knowledge of AI/ML ethics, equity, and fairness principles in healthcare or related fields.
