) in the Hixson Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Professor, with a specialty in bassoon performance and music business/entrepreneurship, beginning Fall 2025. Preference will be given to candidates who have expertise in the areas of music business and entrepreneurship.

The Glenn Korff School of Music (GKSOM) is a professional, comprehensive arts institution devoted to the advancement of music and dance, the preparation of the next generation of arts professionals, and service to the arts professions/institutions in the region, state, nation, and world. The Music/Dance Faculty consists of an outstanding array of internationally acclaimed artists and scholars who care deeply about their students, serving a population of over 400 majors; and who work in close collaboration to serve the mission of the School, College, and University. Celebrating the opening in 2025 of a renovated recital hall and a new state-of-the-art music building, the Glenn Korff School of Music aims to serve as a model for post-secondary music education at the regional, national, and international levels.

Degree programs offered at GKSOM include the BA, BM, BME, MM, and DMA (with emphases in performance, composition, conducting, or jazz studies), along with the Ph.D. in Music Education, Piano Pedagogy, or Vocal Pedagogy. The endowments of GKSOM and the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts offer faculty and students robust financial support for travel, research, and professional development.

Additional arts offerings include Jazz in June, the Lincoln Calling music festival, and year-round international and touring performances at the award-winning Lied Center for Performing Arts.

Duties and Responsibilities

TEACHING:


  • Develop an active and innovative bassoon studio; recruit, teach, and maintain a diverse studio of outstanding bassoon students; lead a weekly studio class; supervise graduate committees and recitals; teach bassoon literature and pedagogy, other courses as determined by GKSOM, and participate in chamber music as needed.




RESEARCH/CREATIVE SCHOLARSHIP:

  • Develop and maintain a national/global profile in bassoon performance, other research/creative activities, and/or pedagogy.

  • Support the implementation of new Bachelor of Arts options through knowledge of music business, or music entrepreneurship.

  • Additionally, the candidate will serve on graduate supervisory committees and advise graduate theses.



SERVICE:

  • Contribute actively to GKSOM's educational, research, and engagement; serve on school, college, and university committees; serve in professional organizations; work in a collaborative and collegial fashion with faculty, staff, students, and administration, support the GKSOM's commitment to collaboration, innovation, equity, diversity, and inclusion.



OTHER:

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of the Glenn Korff School of Music. Conduct all duties in a collegial, ethical, and supportive fashion.

Minimum Required Qualifications:



  • An earned doctoral degree in bassoon performance, completed by August 18, 2025.

  • Experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate bassoon students.

  • Professional performance experience on bassoon.

  • Demonstrated evidence of recruiting quality students.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience in the music industry, including knowledge of current and best practices in management, financial planning, publishing and licensing, career development, networking, and/or marketing.

  • Experience in owning or working for a non-academic affiliated for-profit, not-for-profit, or non-profit music or non-music business entity.

  • Experience with creating degree programs, advancing innovative teaching practices, and envisioning new models of interdisciplinary arts education.

  • Experience in performing chamber music.
