JOB SUMMARY

Employee reports to the Program Director (PD) and will provide support for the YouthBuild program/staff.  The Adult Basic Education/GED teacher is responsible for a multi-level class of adult learners between the ages of 18 - 24. Position is responsible for instructing a COHORT of at least 15 adult learners in reading, writing, and mathematical content knowledge to improve basic skills and/or prepare for a GED credential.

REQUIREMENTS:


  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in education or a related field.

  • Experience teaching adult students is preferred.

  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must possess excellent organizational, planning, and human relations skills.

  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with adult learners, specialists, program managers, school administration, and business/community partner agencies.

  • Strong Math and Science background preferred. Individual must possess knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment appropriate for instructing adult learners in obtaining a GED®, Career Readiness Certificate, and Digital Literacy credentials.

  • Must demonstrate a commitment and ability to serve a diverse community, including low-income families and English language learners. Self-motivated and able to work at a standalone satellite site.

  • Ability to manage and maintain a professional classroom, providing instruction to adult participants whose basic skills are below the twelfth grade level.

  • Possess working skills in the use of technology to deliver Distance Education instruction, communicate via e- mail and teach basic computer skills to the adult learner.

  • Planning and implementation of instructional activities for a COHORT of adult learners preparing for a GED, Career Readiness Certificate (CRC), Digital Literacy, professional soft-skill credentials and an industry certification at an accelerated pace in partnership with the Virginia Community College System.

  • Administer assessments in accordance with vendor guidelines and Virginia Department of Education (VADOE) policies.

  • Collaborate with community college staff to plan a contextualized curriculum.

  • Maintain accurate data and student records using the VADOE Adult Student Profile Document (ASPD)

  • Participates in staff development activities, staff meetings and curriculum development activities as required or assigned

  • Performs related work as assigned

  • The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle to transport oneself, clients, and program supplies as necessary.

  • The physical ability to travel to assigned locations, stand, stoop, bend, reach, pull, push, lift, grasp, climb, talk, see, hear and perform basic and light home maintenance activities, and operate office equipment.

  • Move and lift light objects up to 30 pounds such as mail, supplies, files, and equipment.

  • Operating office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive hand/arm movements.

  • The ability to remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time.

  • Occasionally, ability to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
