The Perfusionist provides quality perfusion care for patients requiring mechanical support of the cardiovascular system during surgery or treatment modality. This position conducts extracorporeal circulation under the direction of a cardiothoracic surgeon and assists in the operation of the intra-aortic balloon pump and cell saver. The Perfusionist provides continuous quality improvement through statistical outcome analysis, education, multidisciplinary approach to patient care, prudent resource utilization and cost center accountability.
Essential Job Functions:
Obtains required patient information according to standard operating procedure.
Manages blood gases, hematocrit, acid-base balance, fluid and electrolyte balance, and anticoagulation/procoagulation of the patient's blood under the supervision of the cardiothoracic surgeon and in accordance with established standard of perfusion care.
Communicates any special needs required for specific perfusion cases to the appropriate departments.
Performs intra-aortic balloon pumping and autologous blood recovery according to standard operating procedures.
Administers cardioplegic solutions, blood and blood products, IV fluids, medications and anesthetics during extracorporeal circulation, as prescribed by, and under the direct supervision of the cardiothoracic surgeon.
Completes an accurate perfusion care record with documentation done.
