ABE InstructorDescription/Job Summary


Overview: The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Instructor plans and implements instruction to students enrolled in the Adult Education/GED Program, which offers Literacy, Pre-GED and GED courses. The instructor is responsible for the planning and delivery of quality instruction, assessment and student progress in ABE/GED courses. These courses are designed to be responsive to the needs and expectations of the diverse community and students we serve. Our goal is to apply a student-focused approach in helping students plan for their career and learning goals. Responsibilities include teaching, developing and implementing digital literacy-based lesson plans, differentiating instruction, and following administrative procedures.


Instructor will receive direct supervision from the Director of Adult Basic Education, Workforce Development Continuing Education Division.

Responsibilities/Duties











Essential Functions:




  • Provide high-quality instruction to adult basic education program participants employing research-based instructional strategies and best practices including differentiated instruction




  • Integrate the career awareness and workforce readiness curricula into instruction




  • Provide mentoring support to students, including referral to tutoring services and guidance in a career pathway




  • Conduct formative and summative student assessments




  • Maintain all required student records and complete all reporting requirements




  • Attend required professional development activities




  • Continually communicate with students on instructional expectations and keep them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations.




  • Perform other duties as assigned








Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Demonstrate knowledge of and cultural sensitivity toward adult student population

  • Demonstrate knowledge of adult educational theory and pedagogy/andragogy

  • Proficient in using digital technology, Microsoft products

  • Ability to use technology proficiently for instruction and student reporting purposes

  • Commitment to the mission and philosophy of BCCC

  • Support program goals and follow guidelines, procedures, and responsibilities

  • Engage peers and colleagues in regular communication with the intent of fostering an open dialogue and healthy exchange of ideas.

  • Plan, design, and deliver adult learner-centered instruction to meet the needs of each learner

  • Assess learning and monitor progress and integrate technology into instruction

  • Maintain knowledge base and pursue professional development specifically related to the instruction of adult learners



Work Environment:


This position typically works indoors in a standard classroom or virtual environment, generally free from hazardous or unpleasant physical conditions. Work involves minimal risk and observance of safety precautions typical of school or office settings. The work environment is highly diverse and demands a high level of cultural competence in interpersonal communications and interactions. Classes are offered in the AM, PM and in the evening. Saturdays may be included.



Physical Demands:


The work entails sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping and reaching. Work requires eye- hand coordination, manual dexterity, near vision acuity, and the ability to see and read printed material and computer screens. Duties involve oral, written, electronic and telephonic communication; typing; and lifting and transporting supplies/materials.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in education or related field

  • Experience working with non-traditional adult student in education or workforce development

  • Minimum of 3 years of classroom instruction (Secondary Education or Adult Education)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree

  • Valid standard professional teaching certificate appropriate to the subject taught

  • Minimum of 3 years of classroom instruction (Secondary Education or Adult Education)
