The Consumables NPD Engineer II is responsible for applying the insights and experience in new product development to support the transformation of product requirement into sustainable, large-scale consumables production. A successful candidate will use their knowledge of mechanical design, detailed characterization of consumables, materials, automation, and injection molding to engineer custom solutions, improve current designs, and enable large scale manufacturing of shelf-stable consumables for the medical device industry. This position is part of the Consumables R&D Team and is on-site located in Sunnyvale, California. At Cepheid, our vision is to be the leading provider of seamlessly connected diagnostic solutions.




In this role, you will have the opportunity to:



  • Design engineering studies, perform hands-on bench or line testing, and use statistical analysis for successful material selection, prototype testing, process performance improvement, support Design for Manufacturing (DfM) to transition designs from Concept Phase through Design and Development, and into production.

  • Write verification and validation protocols and related technical reports to support the transfer of designs into Production and document status of consumables throughout a product lifecycle. Coordinate first article inspections, and qualification activities for validation and verification of consumables components.

  • Establish working relationships with vendors for outsourcing of engineering services, equipment design, and analytical testing of consumables components. Establish working relationships with design engineers to develop and enhance part attributes to improve manufacturability and achieve cost reductions so that high quality parts are consistently delivered.

  • Execute Failure Investigation (FI) and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) as they relate to consumables part performance. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand the effect of various factors on consumables performance.




The essential requirements of the job include:


· BS in Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience to perform at this level and 2-4 years of related work experience.


· Experience with failure investigation and root cause analysis. Basic understanding of injection molding principles.


· Basic statistical skills




It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:



  • Experience with plastic injection molding, part design, high volume manufacturing processes, including machining, extrusion, molding, laser and ultrasonic welding.

  • Basic knowledge of FMEA, SPC, DOE and machining skills are a plus.

  • Proficiency with SolidWorks.
