Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities
Reports to the Refrigeration Shop Foreperson to perform planned maintenance, repair, and other projects in and/or on University owned properties.
Works independently or as part of a team, including other trades.
Performs work on commercial and residential HVAC systems and various refrigeration equipment.
General Responsibilities
Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and replaces chillers, central air systems, window air conditioners, chillers, and refrigeration equipment. Adjusts or replaces worn or defective mechanisms and parts and reassembles repaired systems.
Adjusts valves according to specifications and charges system with proper type of refrigerant by pumping the specified gas or fluid into the system.
Brazes or solders parts to repair defective joints and leaks.
Rods out/cleans heat exchangers/tube bundles.
Cuts, bends, threads, and connects pipe to functional components and water, power, or refrigeration system.
Dismantles malfunctioning systems and test components, using electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic testing equipment.
Drills holes and installs mounting brackets and hangers into floor and walls of building. Fabricates and assembles structural and functional components of refrigeration system, using hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment.
Installs expansion and control valves, using acetylene torches and wrenches. Installs wiring to connect components to an electric power source.
Works as a team with heat mechanics in maintaining, servicing, and repairing HVAC equipment and boiler equipment including water treatment. Services, repairs, and rebuilds pumps and compressors.
Performs other general building maintenance as needed.
Performs some other cross-functional electrical work. Drives vehicle as needed. Participates in the training of apprentices and/or other workers as needed.

EDUCATION
Required
High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
5 years Verifiable journey level experience
Certificate in relevant DOL apprenticed trade
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University Upon Date of Hire

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
