Job Summary

The Manager, Project Controlling is primarily responsible for supervising the Project Controlling team, supporting financial reporting, advising Project Management and Cost Center managers. The role involves close interaction with project and business management.

Reports To: Director, Finance & IT

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:

Cash Flow and Revenue/Margin Management

  • Validate all project portfolio cost, revenue, and invoice forecasts to ensure proper revenue recognition and to define the business forecasts for revenue and cash in. Eliminate surprises.
  • Understand, analyze, and manage all financial movements regarding revenue & cash, and ensure this information is consistent & reconciled regularly in the ERP systems.
  • Provide support for correct risk recognition valuation and associated accounting. Ensure total consistency of assessment of provision recognition and accounting for any shared risk / opportunity in the project.
  • Check, control, monitor and forecast cost movements monthly.
  • Manage and forecast cash movements monthly.
  • Manage taxes, insurances and customs/import/etc duties as required, and monitor the effect on the project costs/cash flows.

Process Management

  • Have a clear understanding of the project documents and systems, and actively manage any financial implications arising from them.
  • Ensure that all financial processes and internal controls (including DoA) are implemented, robust and compliant.
  • Ensure reconciliation between project books and local statutory books.
  • Review project finance specific internal controls.
  • Coordinate with the project team to ensure consistent accounting (margin recognition) and reporting across the portfolio.
  • Implement and maintain tools used within the Project Controlling team.
  • Ensure that project staff related issues for personal income tax are dealt in accordance with local laws and regulations.
  • Ensure the business is compliant to all regulatory requirements.

Project Controlling

  • Take overall responsibility of all financial issues on the projects from pre-contract award to contract close.
  • Ensure the adequate establishment of the onshore project controlling.
  • Understand, analyze, and manage all financial movements within the projects and ensure they are correctly and accurately reported.
  • Provide necessary support to Project Managers on financial and commercial issues.


Cost Center Controlling

  • Take overall responsibility of all financial issues on the cost centers.
  • Prepare the annual cost center budget and review / analyze variances monthly, providing an updated forecast.
  • Understand, analyze, and manage all financial movements within the cost centers and ensure they are correctly and accurately reported.
  • Provide necessary support to cost center managers on financial issues.

Management Reporting

  • Prepare the periodical consolidated Project & Cost Center reporting.
  • Manage and reconcile the onshore and offshore scope project results both within the project accounts and with respect to balance sheet positions related to the project.
  • Produce all financial project reporting as requested by the project functions.
  • Ensure accuracy of local unit and global orders and sales forecasts, and their timely entry into the corporate reporting tools

People Management

  • Lead Project Controlling team to ensure all projects within the portfolio are controlled and reported in a similarly rigorous manner as detailed above for own projects
  • Collaborative work with team members and/or direct reports, to identify the behaviors, know-how, and skills required to achieve goals; identify specific behaviors, know-how, and technical skill areas for focus and evaluation.

Minimum Requirements


Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.


Knowledge / Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years experience of long term project accounting / controlling including developing, implementing, and maintaining project controlling processes.
  • International finance experience preferred.


Technical Skills / Competencies

  • Minimum of 5 years of successful performance in roles requiring a high level of commercial awareness, and proven ability to work with sales / tender teams including commercial instrument knowledge (hedges, bonds, LC’s, etc)
  • Minimum 5 years experience solving technical or organizational problems on cross-functional teams, with communication skills at an advanced level.
  • Minimum 2 years experience managing direct reports, with successful track record of identifying and promoting the right people on the team to the right places by harnessing and developing individual talents. Proven ability to anticipate future skill and experience requirements to develop/hire people to fill these needs.
  • Minimum 5 years experience presenting to peers, higher management, and customers.
  • Minimum 5 years proven experience in supporting multiple Projects or Programs, with on-time delivery and on budget.
  • Proficient in computer applications relevant to operational management; including SAP finance modules and MS Office programs
  • Ability to analyze, understand and summarize complex financial data including tax risks related to project structures.
