Position Summary:

The Financial Reporting Accountant Senior position assists in the preparation of the annual consolidated financial statements for the university, including the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) and Richard Bland College (RBC). The position is responsible for other compliance reporting and to ensure the integrity of data in the university's financial system.


Primary responsibilities include preparation of the Facilities & Administrative Rate Proposal for W&M and VIMS, analysis and compilation of the Foundations' financial information for inclusion in the consolidated financial statements, preparing investment reconciliations and journal entries, preparing year-end entries for the financial statements, various year-end reports and schedules, financial surveys, and journal entry review.

This position may require hours beyond the typical work week due to high peak times such as financial statement preparation.

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Substantive and progressive financial accounting experience.

  • Demonstrated experience working in an automated accounting system.

  • Strong working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).Demonstrated knowledge of financial statement preparation.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to extract and analyze data, resolve discrepancies, and exercise good judgment when making decisions.

  • Proficiency with software applications to include Excel and automated accounting systems.

  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, with the demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituencies.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities concurrently within the allotted deadlines.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Knowledge of Oracle-based systems. Knowledge of the Commonwealth of Virginia's accounting system, policies and procedures.

  • Significant experience in financial accounting, preparing a variety of reports (financial statements and other compliance reports and/or surveys).

  • Experience working with CRIS software for the preparation of the F&A rate proposal.

  • Workday - finance experience is a plus as is experience in governmental and/or higher education accounting.

Advertised Pay Range:

$55,000 - $65,000, commensurate with experience.


Advertised Pay Range Statement:

All hiring rates are commensurate with relevant experience up to the advertised amount considering internal alignment.
