Position Introduction
The Department of Art at Vassar College, in collaboration with the Urban Studies Program, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in architectural and urban history at the level of Assistant Professor to begin in the fall semester of 2025. We seek an innovative historian of modern and contemporary architecture and urbanism with a transnational, diasporic, and/or global approach.
AA Statement
Vassar College is deeply committed to increasing the diversity of the campus community and the curriculum, and to promoting an environment of equality, inclusion, and respect for difference. Candidates who can contribute to this goal through their teaching, research, advising, and other activities are encouraged to identify their strengths and experiences in this area. The College is an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action employer, and especially welcomes applications from veterans, women, individuals with disabilities, and members of racial, ethnic, and other groups whose underrepresentation in the American professoriate has been severe and longstanding.
Position Description
We seek a scholar who can teach dynamically in an undergraduate liberal arts setting. The successful candidate will teach courses on architectural and urban history, ranging from the eighteenth century to the present, at all levels of the art history curriculum. These courses should encompass global perspectives on architectural design, urban planning, and theory. The candidate will also teach one course a year within the multidisciplinary Urban Studies Program. Advising and mentoring within both the Art Department and the Urban Studies Program is required. Teaching load in the first year is four courses; after that it is four courses plus a tutorial-style “intensive” which may include supervision of senior theses. Candidates must have the Ph.D. in architectural history or an allied field in hand at the start of employment.
