POSITION SUMMARY
The Instructor of Diesel Technology (DT) reports to the Associate Dean for Applied Science and is responsible for teaching DT courses. These courses include classroom and laboratory instruction. In addition, this position serves as a maintenance technician for the Commercial Driver Training program. This role supports the College's mission of providing and ensuring quality educational programs for ASUN's various constituencies.
This position is a 12-month faculty position and will be housed on the Newport campus.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Faculty Role:
·Promotes, develops, and assesses quality curriculum and coursework that align with the college's mission.
·Conducts effective instructional sessions to teach and demonstrate principles, techniques, procedures, or methods of designated subjects.
·Develops course curriculum, course handouts, lectures, labs, and presentations, including reviewing and participating in textbook selection process where appropriate.
·Schedules, supervises, debriefs, and evaluates students in observation and field experience, and similar settings as appropriate for the course or program.
·Supervises and monitors students' use of equipment.
·Supervises independent or group projects, field placements, laboratory work, or other training.
·Provides individualized instruction and tutorial or remedial instruction.
·Observes and evaluates students' work to determine progress, provide feedback, and make suggestions for improvement.
·Administers oral, written, or performance tests to measure progress and to evaluate training effectiveness.
·Participates in conferences, seminars, and training sessions to keep abreast of developments in the field of study and integrate relevant information into training programs.
·Maintains accessibility to students via email, phone, or personal conferences. Maintains course/student records such as student grades, attendance, and training activity details in accordance with FERPA regulations and submit records by established deadlines.
·Keeps a flexible weekly schedule that best facilitates student learning and access.
·Remains current in academic or program discipline, including maintaining licensure, certification, or continuing education requirements where appropriate. Receives training or stay current in advances within the field of study that promote student learning.
·Supports the Dean for Applied Sciences in cultivating and maintaining strong industry partnerships to ensure local support and demand for graduates.
·Helps students identify and achieve their educational goals through participating in the college's advising process, as well as providing incidental academic advice to students in classes.
·Attends commencement or other ceremonies appropriate to the faculty member's discipline or program. Attends departmental, divisional, and college-wide meetings where appropriate or as required by supervisor.
·Posts and keeps office hours to facilitate interaction with students, the college community, and the public.
·Assists the Dean for Applied Sciences in the development of program/department budget requests as appropriate.
·Maintains training facilities and coordinates appropriate safety guidelines, training, and equipment use.
·Serves on college-wide committees, special project teams, state and local committees, and community service and civic committees as needed, and acts as a professional and positive representative of the College.
·Promotes and supports concurrent partnerships with area high schools (and career technical center).
·Performs other duties as assigned.
Maintenance Technician Role:
*Constructs and updates checklists as appropriate (i.e., daily, weekly, monthly, etc.)
*Inspects all Class A trucks to ensure CDT classes can flow without interruption
*Schedules repairs around CDT, DT, HVLT and IGNITE classes.
*Orders parts for repairs
*Turns in all receipts in a timely manor
*Bids tires once a year
*Maintains a PM program to limit break downs
*Makes sure that all road trucks are DOT compliant
*Performs other duties as assigned.
MINUMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum requirements for this position include an Associate Degree or equivalent credentialing. Experience and professional certification may be substituted for the degree requirement. Applicants must also have the ability to use and understand related diagnostic equipment and diesel computer programs. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Preferred qualifications include an associate degree or appropriate industry certification(s) and/or three to five years of experience working on class a trucks. Previous recruitment, administration, and college teaching experience are also preferred.
KNOWLEDGE
The successful candidate will teach Diesel Technology courses at the two-year college level. This includes classroom and laboratory instruction. The candidate must be able to work cooperatively with other entities of the university in a learning-centered environment. Applicants must also ensure quality and cleanliness of the lab, demonstrate teaching and educational facilitation skills, and exhibit mature interpersonal and communications skills. In addition, this position serves as a maintenance technician for the Commercial Driver Training program; therefore, the ability to inspect, diagnose and repair/maintain trucks and trailers is a necessity.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Mature communication skills are required, as well as strong computer skills.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent, and to prepare and interpret bar graphs.
CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram formats.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Under general direction of the Dean for Applied Sciences, working from policies and general directives. Refers specific cases to supervisor when clarification or interpretation of the organization's policy is needed.
PLANNING
Considerable responsibility with regard to general assignments in planning time, method, manner, and/or sequence of performance of own work.
DECISION MAKING
Performs work operations which permit frequent opportunity for decision-making of minor importance and also frequent opportunity for decision-making of major importance, either of which would affect the work operations of the organization and the organization's customers.
ANALYTICAL ABILITY / PROBLEM SOLVING
Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.
USE OF MACHINES, EQUIPMENT AND/OR COMPUTERS
Regular use office equipment (desktop/laptop computer and software).
CONTACT WITH OTHERS
Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as within a team structure. Involves both furnishing and obtaining information and, also, attempting to influence the decisions of those persons contacted. Regular contact with other college employees at all levels within the organization and constituents outside of the college.
